1966 VIN# decode Information

It's a 1966, TRANS code C wasn't used 1965 or earlier.
129" Wheelbase.
COLOR: Blank *
F253 = F250 2WD, 6,000 lbs. GVWR
281: 2 = Medium Blue Crush Vinyl & Medium Blue Wicker Pattern Vinyl / 81 = 81A Standard Cab.
C = Ford type 3.03 3 Speed Manual all Syncromesh Transmission.
25 = Dana 60 Rear Axle / 4.56-1 / No Limited Slip / 5,200 lbs. Rear Axle Capacity.
6,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
129 net HP @ 4,000 RPM (240 1V I-6).
830558:
83 = Purchased by the US Gov't.
0558 = Domestic Special Order number. Truck special ordered by original purchaser, not "bought off the lot."
* Blank: When there is no COLOR code stamped on the Warranty Plate, truck painted a non standard color per original purchasers request, making it a Domestic Special Order.
Considering the blue seat upholstery, if it's painted dark blue, may be a former USAF truck.
US Gov't bought the cheapest possible vehicles, if it has a pickup bed, it's probably a 8' Flareside. I doubt it came w/a radio, if it has a heater, it's probably the el cheapo Economy Fresh-Air version.

Cab & Chassis came with no "back of cab" equipment, enabling the buyer to install any type of aftermarket equipment, most popular were Utility bodies.
With a blue seat, it would not have been painted green originally. Look on the firewall inside the cab, under the floormat and seat for the original color.

F10 = F100 2WD
Y = 352 2V
L = Michigan Truck Assembly Plant
792455 = 1966, assembled December 1965.
C5AE: C = 1960's / 5 = 1965 / A = Galaxie/LTD / E = Engineering // 1965/66 F100/350 352 & Galaxie/LTD 352/390 use the same 2V intake manifold.
But the casting date cannot be 5L80 as the last two numbers refer to the day of the month. The 8 is probably a 3 = 5L30.
5L30: November (L) 30, 1965 (5) / A = January, M = December, the letter I is skipped.

Did the Deluxe heater version and Economy Fresh-Air heater version have the same size heater core?
If so, was the major difference between the two versions then just the push/pull cable controls vs. the lever throw for the defrost?
Thanks in advance for the clarification, Guys!

Truck is 47 years old...who knows if the engine is the original, or has been swapped.
B&S: 352: 4.00" x 3.50" / 360: 4.05" x 3.50" / 390: 4.05" x 3.78"
Measuring the stroke will pin it down somewhat. Manifold is the original, if you can find the block casting number and date code, that'll pin it down even further.
btw: Block will have 352 cast on it, but this means NOTHING! All FE engines cast as 352's .. this is a foundry mark only. So, it might be a 352, might not be.

1965/66 F100/250 / 1967/72 F100/750 except 1968/72 F100/350 with factory installed integral A/C / 1973/79 F500/880.
1973/79 F100/350 & 1978/79 Bronco except with high output heater, except with factory installed integral A/C, except with Hi/Lo Comfort Vent System.

1965/66 Deluxe Fresh-Air heater uses a different plenum chamber (heater box) than the Economy Fresh-Air heater.
Deluxe has two cables mounted to a bracket, located under the dash to the right of the steering column. One cable operates the damper door that allows fresh air to flow into the plenum chamber.
The other cable operates the cable controlled heater water valve (C3UZ-18495-A / Motorcraft YG-133) that is spliced into the inlet to heater core heater hose.
Economy heater has a manually operated heater water shut-off valve (C5TZ-18495-A) that is spliced into the inlet to heater core heater hose.

As I suspected, the '65/'66 Deluxe and Economy Fresh-Air heaters do use the same heater core.
However, as you pointed out, the two systems do use different heater boxes though.... and that makes sense to me because the Deluxe Fresh-Air box uses a cable-controlled damper and the Economy Fresh-Air box has a hand lever damper manually flipped below the dash.
Both of my '65s were OEM-equipped with the Economy Fresh-Air heater system. I have long since removed the water shut-off valves, since they were ceased up & unable to open/close any longer. I considered replacing them with a non-OEM plastic replacement ball valve, but then decided against it and simply allowed the coolant to continually flow through the heater core; with the hopes that by doing so may extend the life of the heater core....rather than have the coolant lay stagnant in the heater core for 1/2 to 2/3 of the year.

Actually, the new plastic replacement is great. I replace a couple on mine and I know some of the other guys have also replaced theirs with the new type. NO MORE rusted out shut-offs. On one of my trucks, I replace the factory style 3 times because they rusted out. NO MORE. IMO, unless your going for restoration, go with the plastic one.
