steering column

The steering wheel locked up trying to turn left and then was loose. It can be moved up and down and side to side about 1/2 to one inch. It's a 93 F-150 with tilt wheel. I can't find any info in my repair manuals on the column. Any info on dis assembly and repair would be appreciated.
Thanks

I think the upper steering wheel brearing went out.

I had the same problem with mine last week, 97 F350 with tilt. Mine didn't lock up but it was grinding and wouldn't return to center, felt heavy and had about 1/2 play.

Here is a link to LMC trucks to see what is in there:
LMC Truck Parts - Page 119

Items # 7 & 8 are the bearings you need, you may also need the sleeve

Any way remove your wheel and covers to the column, and pull out your turn signal switch and let it hang. This is what you'll see

Remove the black piece next, that is the turn signal ring. Pry it off easy so you don't break it., Remove the snap ring and pull the bearing retainer off. May need to pry a bit to get if out of there. Inspect it as it may also be bad...mine was.

Here is what you should see

Under the bearing retainer is what they call the small column bearing and after that is the large bearing. Remove the retainer and small bearing and you are left with the large bearing. Now you will probally see the damage. The ***** and bearing seperator on mine were damaged. I removed what was left of the bearing leaving the outer casing. The outer part of the bearing came out fairly easy, my son grabed it with a screw driver and rotated it out. Once its removed use a magnet to remove the debris from the bearing. Also check the column for burrs that would prevent you from reinstalling the new parts, you may need to fie them off.

All you need to do now is install the new parts in reverse order and you should be good to go.

MAKE SURE THAT THE SNAP RING IS PROPERLY SEATED.

I hope this helps

did you do any good on yours pnp522?
KC or anyone else... It seems like I will have to remove the pivot screws and remove that whole upper assembly to get to the lower (larger) bearing. My parts just came from LMC Truck today but they were all genuine FORD parts, thought that was kinda strange, but n-e how I need more input on the column lower bearing procedure. Thanks, john

What are the original part numbers for the 2 bearings, so ican check local ford dealer price and availability. I remember the shift tube was $5 cheaper than ebay and at the time gas wasnt near as pricey.

Sorry I thought I posted the outcome. There is a large and small bearing and a kit with a new tolerance ring, steel sleeve, upper bearing snap ring and steering wheel attaching bolt. The part number is FOZ-3L539-F. I don;t remember the part numbers for the bearings. The upper one is the small one and the lower one is the large one. The parts were cheaper at Ford than anywhere else except the upper steering shaft which had to be replaced also since it had been damaged by the upper bearing coming apart. The best price for that was at NAPA. One dealer had the kit and the upper bearing and the lower one was next day from a dealer about an hour away. There is a website stolenandrecovered.com that has detailed step by step directions to do the repair. These were the best I found. The hardest part was getting the spring for the tilt wheel back in place. An E-brake spring compressor can help. It took longer to get the spring back in than the rest of the repair.

small bearing is (FORD) F4DZ-3517-A ......or (LMC) 45-0743

Large bearing is (FORD) F3TZ-3517-A ..... or (LMC) 45-0744

I Got mine done earlier today but the upper colomn shaft was wore and should have been replaced, so chances are it will wear-out prematurely.
