Ford Recalls Nearly a Half-Million Maverick, Bronco Sport Models Over Battery Issue

Ford recalls nearly a half-million more Maverick and Bronco Sport models, though the fix is a rather simple software update.

Over the past couple of years, no automotive manufacturer has issued more recalls than Ford, which is obviously not great news for the automaker or folks that own its vehicles. Though it has launched new programs and placed a major emphasis on improving initial quality, FoMoCo has also been quite clear that it will take years to fully right the proverbial ship, and as such, we’re still seeing a rather large number of vehicles being treated to Ford recalls – a list that now includes nearly another half-million Maverick pickups and Bronco Sport crossovers.

The problem, according to these Ford recalls and the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), is that select examples of these models have faulty body and power train control modules that may fail to detect any sort of change in the state of 12-volt battery charge. Problem is, this could mean that when the battery is low on charge, the system may not detect it. This could lead to a loss of the driver’s ability to use accessories like hazard lights, or worse – a total and unexpected loss of drive power.

In total, this problem affects 456,565 vehicles built at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico – consisting of 402,978 2021-2024 Bronco Sport crossovers built between February 5, 2020, and March 14, 2024, as well as 53,587 2022-2023 Maverick pickups produced between February 3, 2021, and October 28, 2022.

In terms of a fix, Ford is instructing dealers to recalibrate the body control module and power train control module – which won’t cost customers a dime, of course, but those same customers will also be simply receiving a software update that can rectify the battery issue as well. Customers can choose to take their vehicles to a dealer for this fix, or lean on the automaker’s newly expanded pickup and delivery services, too.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of our customers,” Ford said in a statement. “Affected owners will receive a notification to have their vehicle software updated at no cost. Customers can use mobile service and pick-up and delivery to complete this recall.”

Unfortunately for Maverick and Bronco Sport owners, this isn’t even close to being the only recall issued for those models as of late. In fact, models equipped with the 1.5-liter I-3 EcoBoost engine have also been facing issues with cracked fuel injectors for some time, a problem that can reportedly be fixed with an engine control software update to include leak detection software, coupled with the installation of a drain tube.
