1. A new Ford Bronco is announced for 2020

The 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit held a number of fascinating promises for the future. Among the most tantalizing for Ford fans were the news of a return to the Ford Bronco nameplate in 2020. Executive Vice President of Ford Joe Hinrichs offered only as much information as was needed to get the hype rolling. Other than that, a lot of what we supposedly know about the '20 Bronco amounts to speculation. One thing we do know so far is that the 2020 Bronco will be released on a global platform.

2. The Bronco concept so far looks fierce

A potential rendering of what the 2020 Bronco will look like was penned up in 2016. While there's reason to believe that the final product will look considerably different than our speculations would point to, the basic gist so far makes it look like the Bronco will take a compelling spot in the Ford Trucks lineup. Leaked information suggests that there were be a number of aesthetic innovations to help distinguish it from the similar Ford Everest SUV. The same leak also suggested that the Bronco will be available only as a four-door model.

3. It will likely use the Ford Ranger body

Perhaps it's not a coincidence, given that new Ford Ranger is slated for 2019, but it's looking very likely that the 2020 Bronco will use the existing Ranger body as its base. Considering that the Ranger is a fair bit smaller than the mighty Broncos fans could be expecting, this could stand as a cause for some disappointment. However, with the rising price of gas and an industry focus on efficiency, the smaller size would make more sense for the markets Ford is focusing on here. Rather than an off-road behemoth, we might expect something more similar to the rustic Bronco trucks of the 1960s. Nonetheless, it will be very interesting to see how these two brother models compare and contrast with one another once both are out on the road. There's no doubt that the Bronco will be the more heavy-duty of the two, but how big the distinction will be, we can't be sure of yet.

4. It's inspired a 700 million dollar plant reinvestment

In light of the planned 2020 Bronco and 2018 Ranger, Ford has deemed it worthwhile to reinvigorate their Michigan plant with a whopping 700 million dollar investment. With that kind of financial firepower behind the Bronco, it is clear that Ford is expecting big things from the model in a few years' time. What's more, the revitalized assembly plant means that the Bronco will be directly helping in the creation of many new American jobs.

5. What can we really expect in 2020?

The smaller body for the next generation Bronco rules out a larger engine like the V8. Some have speculated that the 2020 Bronco will pack a 3.0 Diesel engine; others still think it's too far from now to accurately say. With Jeep having similarly announced a new Wrangler model in 2020, we at least know what Ford's greatest competition will be.

6. The Bronco has come a long way

Fans of Ford trucks love to dote on the history of the F-Series from the 1970s onwards, but the Bronco was safely carrying families long before that. While the modern Bronco is a monster compared to the quaint version of yore, whatever next-gen model we're looking forward to will undoubtedly mark a new era in the nameplate's history.
