VW Powered F-150 is the Weirdest Thing You'll See Today

We've seen some crazy engine swaps over the years, but this one might take the cake.

1. The Volkswagen Beetle of F-150s

We've seen all sorts of F-150 engine swaps over the years. Everything from giant, supercharged mills to (gasp) Cummins and Chevy swaps. But what we've never seen, even once, is a 1994 Ford F-150 with an air-cooled engine from a Volkswagen Beetle. And for good reason, obviously. But this is America, land of opportunity. And such a thing apparently exists.

2. The Question Is, Why?

At first glance (and second, and third), it's hard to understand why someone would do something like this. For starters, the little Beetle engines barely produce enough power to move a tiny car, let alone a heavy truck. Secondly, the rear mounted mill and transaxle take up precious cargo space in the bed. So, essentially, the swap accomplishes nothing. You get less power and less utility. But hey, now it's not just another boring '94 F-150 -- it's a conversation piece!

3. VW-Powered Everything

In all fairness, the air-cooled VW engine has been used to power just about everything over the years, in part because there are millions of them out there. The tiny flat four engines are rather simple and rugged, so there's that. And now we can safely say that we've seen just about every kind of V-Dub swap there is. Well, except maybe a Super Duty (don't get any ideas!).

4. Mad Scientist Creation

The man behind this piece of metal madness goes by the name of Bryan Michaud. And we know that it runs and drives (probably very slowly), because he's posted three videos of the old truck tooling around the yard. Sans bed, we get a pretty good look at the little engine, which takes up about the same amount of space as a modern gas tank.

5. Pointless, or Pretty Cool?

Most folks will hate on this insane conversion, dubbing it pointless and stupid. But that's missing the point altogether. The spirit of hot rodding was founded on doing things that nobody else was doing. So even though this V-Dub powered F-150 kind of misses the mark when it comes to power and utility, it's still unique. And we're guessing that this trend won't exactly catch on anytime soon, either.
