The Many and Varied Careers of Ford F-Series Trucks
Ford's trucks are known for their versatility, as work vehicles and daily drivers, however, there are a ton of different things you can do with an F-Series truck. Here's a selection of jobs it can do that help demonstrate just how versatile they can be.
1. A Snow Plow
The amazing thing about the F-150 and the rest of Ford's F-Series trucks are their practical versatility. If there's a job that needs doing, a Ford truck can probably do it, even if that job involves pushing frozen slush and snow off the road. Although a plow itself obviously doesn't come with the stock model, the sturdy traction of a 4x4 Ford truck should be useful wherever there's winter weather involved.
2. A Heavy-Duty Police Cruiser
This is an official model of the 2016 F-150 we all know and love. While it's still a relatively new option in law enforcement, the Ford "Special Service Vehicle Package" already makes the F-150 out to be a force to be reckoned with. Ford trucks have already established themselves in the private sector as a versatile powerhouse, so it's little surprise a partnership like this would eventually come to pass.
3. A Moving Van
Moving is one of the most stressful things a person can deal with. On top of the planning, packing, and busywork involved, there is the task of having to rent out a moving van, which can be expensive and cumbersome. Maybe this isn't as unconventional as some of the other items on this list, but an F-Series' strength can be put to the test by moving a life's worth of stuff from point A to B. Sure, the cargo bed isn't enough to accommodate all of the larger furniture, but you can rent a trailer to tow with the truck. It may cost something, but it'll certainly be cheaper than the big box truck and the ridiculous mileage charges! Also, recent editions of the F-150 are able to tow up to 12,000 pounds when properly equipped, so you needn't worry about the truck running out of juice on you.
4. A Drag Racer
People don't usually think of the high speeds and split-second launches when trucks are involved, but you might be surprised how well an F-Series can be tuned up for speed. The Ford SVT Lightning, pictured above, was one such example where the truck could hold its own with many muscle cars on the track, especially after a little tuning. You might be more familiar with F-Series trucks in off road races, such as the Baja 1000, but the proliferation of turbocharged EcoBoost trucks has led to plenty of guys cranking it up and going drag racing.
5. A Pop-up Camper
One of the hardest parts of camping is taking the equipment from the car to the site and setting it all up. This gets even more difficult if you can't find a sufficiently flat area to set up your tent. Enter the F-Series to the rescue, as per usual. Specially designed tents for cargo beds take a ton of the hassle and strain out of your camping experience.
6. An Instant Swimming Pool
Yeah, this has got to be one of the standout cases of "redneck ingenuity" to have ever involved a pickup truck. Is the truck parked? Are you close to a water spigot? Is it nice enough outside to be worth the effort? Just seal the surface and walls of the cargo bed with some plastic sheet material to keep it from trickling out, and you're set.
7. A Makeshift Artillery Vehicle
It may sound strange to first world civilians for an F-Series truck to be pressed into military use, however, the same "built Ford tough" quality that serves you on the road is used on the battlefield in other parts of the world. A pickup truck that gets refitted with a gun is referred to as a technical, and they're most popular in Africa, and the middle east. The F-350 Super Duty in the picture has been mounted with a BMP-1 turret originally developed by the Soviet Union. There is some irony found in the technology of two competing empires combined like this to go against both of them at once in Syria, where the photo was taken.
