Underrated Concept

One of the coolest features on display at the Chicago Auto Show this past July was the real-life translation of the Rocket League Ford F-150. The concept-like truck flew a bit under the radar, though, as it was overshadowed by the presence of Ford products like the Bronco and Maverick. With that said, the video game pickup is definitely worthy of a second look.

Collaborative Design Project

For those unfamiliar with Rocket League, it's a multi-player video game that combines soccer with outrageous cars. There is a gigantic ball involved, and to score, the players need to navigate their cars to guide the ball into the opponent's net. Designers from the game's parent company Psyonix worked together with the Ford design team to create the fictional version of America's best-selling pickup.

Virtual to Reality

Shortly after the announcement of the partnership was made, the video game truck was released to the Rocket League community. Though it comes with outlandish proportions and sci-fi features, it retains the character of the F-150. When it came time to bring the virtual model into reality, the builders started out with a standard F-150 and went to work modifying just about every panel to match the look of the video game truck.

Whimsical Features

The real-life version of the design features the same rocket vents through the tail lights, a rocket booster in the bed, flared fenders and massive 37-inch tires. It's a pretty amazing transformation and a cool-looking truck regardless of the video game ties. But perhaps the disconnect between the video game demographic and the Ford truck target audience contributed to the fact that the build didn't get as much attention as we feel it deserves.

Deep Into E-Sports

Ford's Youtube channel also shared a video that takes us through the fascinating design and build process of the Rocket League truck. This is not the first time Ford has invested in bringing a video game car into real life. Recently, the manufacturer's e-sports team, Team Fordzilla created the P1 virtual race car, which was also translated into a life-size model.
