Original Jurassic Park '92 Explorer Gets the Spotlight at Petersen Museum
This Explorer has been through quite the ringer by being battered by a psychotic dinosaur in Jurassic Park. But now it's here for your enjoyment courtesy of the Petersen Automotive Museum.
Dino DNA
Straight from the fictional location of the Isle of Nublar, near Costa Rica, comes this 1992 Explorer XLT Tour SUV. This classic off-road vehicle served as a trolly-like device for the bioengineering company InGen in the 1993 blockbuster dinosaur film. In the film, dinosaurs have been resurrected through the magic of DNA manipulation and the special effects house Industrial Light and Magic.
Fiction becomes reality
In an interesting twist and something that seemed so farfetched back when the film came out, these Explorers were all-electric! The SUVs were outfitted with optional 4-wheel drive and the large cabin size of the vehicle afforded a comfy space for park guests. The grouping of floodlights gave passengers a great view of things even in the darkest corners such as Jurassic period plant life and a rampaging T-Rex.
Built Ford tough
Each of the Tour Vehicles made for the film had a navigation system which was tremendously forward thinking for the time. The vehicles themselves drew the needed electrical energy right from the track they rode upon. Each SUV came with features such as leather interiors, night vision goggles, and drinking water taps. An interesting note is that while the vehicles were powered by the tracks, their lights could have been powered non-stop by their batteries. Proof of this is after the Explorer is pushed off the track by a T.Rex but the headlights and high beams continued to work.
This SUV is a survivor
The Petersen Museum in sunny Los Angeles is playing host to not only this Explorer but a bevy of other vehicles that have been featured in film over the past few decades. In the exhibit, you'll find creations from such films as "Ghost in the Shell," "Back to the Future," and "Ironman." The purpose of the showcase, which was done in conjunction with Comic-Con Museum is to point the spotlight on the magic of human imagination with various vehicles in movies.
It makes perfect sense
"Being in the heart of the entertainment industry in Hollywood and Los Angeles, we’re thrilled to be able to display these cinematic icons, “said Petersen Automotive Museum Executive Director Terry L. Karges.“When you see these pieces of cinematic history in person it truly offers a different perspective than seeing them on the big screen. It is truly like nothing else we have done here at the Petersen.”The exhibit also features a Microsoft HoloLens experience called “Worlds Reimagined.”
To see the Explorer in person as well as other movie icons you'll have until March 15th, 2020.
