Celebrating Classic Design

At the 2024 SEMA Show, the iconic 1978 Ford F-250 Highboy by Fat Fender Garage showcases a refreshing departure from the polished vehicles that typically fill the exhibit halls. Rather than stripping the truck of its worn exterior, the team chose to preserve its aged, patina-rich red paint, allowing decades of Arizona’s sun exposure to tell its story.

Timeless Patina

Having spent its life on a ranch, this Highboy bears witness to hard work and resilience, a history that the restoration team sought to preserve. The preservation of its weathered exterior acknowledges its desert roots, where it survived the harsh climate and retained a deep patina from years under the sun.

Upgraded Power

A key part of the restoration was replacing the original Ford 360 V8 engine with a Lincoln 7.5-liter V8—known in Ford’s 1978 lineup as the “460”—which delivers an ample 245 horsepower and, most importantly, a tremendous torque boost. The engine upgrade isn’t just about raw power; it includes an Edelbrock fuel injection system, which enhances starting reliability and drivability compared to the original carbureted setup.

Modern Enhancements

The rebuilt New Process transfer case and new Dana 60 axles, sourced from a 2022 Super Duty, ensure that this Highboy maintains a blend of modern stability with its original ruggedness. Fox performance shocks at all four corners further enhance handling and comfort, making this truck more suitable for off-road adventures than its factory setup could have ever allowed.

A Thoughtful, Arizona-Inspired Interior

The interior combines elements that honor the truck’s past with enhancements designed for modern comfort. Rich brown leather seats are adorned with a custom desert-themed fabric—a nod to Arizona’s sunsets and open landscapes. The distressed leather seating, accented with Pendleton Grand Canyon fabric on the seats and sun visors, evokes the muted tones of the Arizona desert, blending traditional ranch aesthetics with luxury.

Practicality

For practicality, a Gen-5 Vintage Air HVAC system ensures comfort in extreme weather, and a layer of SoundShield insulation was added beneath the floor mats to dampen sound and regulate temperature. The dashboard, outfitted with real burl walnut wood and billet aluminum cranks, adds an elegant touch while maintaining the original character of the truck.

Rooted in Arizona’s Heritage

Avery Sly, the truck’s owner, saw this project as more than just a restoration; it was a tribute to the Highboy’s Arizona heritage. Sly, who has called Arizona home for over a decade, wanted to create a vehicle that embodied the spirit of the place. "We wanted to honor its rugged past," Sly explained, emphasizing the significance of the truck’s exterior patina, left untouched as a tribute to its years on the ranch. This dedication to authenticity means the truck not only captures the essence of Arizona but also feels like a part of its landscape, one that has endured the elements and still remains true to its roots.

Paying the Price for Unique Craftsmanship

Beyond its aesthetics, this Highboy exemplifies a careful balance between history and craftsmanship. The blend of a worn exterior with refined mechanical and interior upgrades required significant expertise, time, and resources. Fat Fender Garage’s craftsmanship, from the engine overhaul to the precise leatherwork, has transformed this 1978 Ford F-250 into a collector’s piece. Priced at $95,000, this truck offers more than mere functionality or appearance; it’s a representation of Fat Fender Garage’s dedication to blending past and present. The Highboy is more than a showpiece; it is a driving tribute to the Arizona desert and the heritage of classic American trucks.
