Lightweight Copy

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Although meant as a compliment, the common saying actually ends with “...that mediocrity can pay to greatness.” While this 1969 Bronco looks the part, it is a copy. Far from mediocre, the 'imitation' first-gen delivers some amped-up flattery with its dual motor, 600 horsepower powertrain, and lightweight carbon fiber body.

Vintage Generation

California-based Zero Labs Automotive revealed their imitation Bronco in early January at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Not their first venture into vintage off-road vehicles, the company also offers an aluminum body, all-electric, Land-Rover Series III in various configurations. Along with duplicating the next generation of collectibles, Zero Labs also performs electric conversions for existing classics.

Composite Figures

Zero Labs wants to entice “clean energy heroes,” with their innovative, carbon fiber Bronco 'copy.' They tout that the composite body is twenty-five percent lighter than Ford's original steel version, although no figures were provided as to the overall curb weight of the electrified version. By comparison, the original gas-powered, first-generation Bronco weighs in at 3,400 lbs.

Adaptive Event

Held annually in Las Vegas, Nevada, CES is known as the most influential tech event in the world. While an unlikely venue to roll out a new truck, the show is otherwise known as “the proving ground for breakthrough technologies.” First held in 1967, a major component now includes new vehicle advancements such as autonomous mobility and adaptive functions.

Embracing Future

Zero Labs partnered with Autel Energy for the inaugural unveiling. Located in Port Washington, New York, Autel Energy is a leading designer and manufacturer of EV chargers. CEO, John Thomas elaborated on the collaboration, “As the country transitions to electric vehicles, we wanted to show that embracing the future doesn't mean that you have to give up the past.”

Beloved Conversion

Zero Labs incorporates a deep appreciation for classic design while focusing on new innovations. They brand their 'restomod' approach as “The past remade for the future.” Founder and CEO Adam Roe confidently states, “Our technology has proven that the world's most beloved vehicles can be electrified at a scale and level of performance not possible with the old DIY conversion methods.”

Platform Versions

Powering the eco-friendly 4x4 is a 100 kWh battery that offers 486 lb-ft of torque and a 235-mile range. Suspension is provided by Fox Racing shocks or an air-ride system. Dubbed the '2.0 Platform,' the current configuration has dual electric motors mounted to each transaxle. Previous versions retained the Bronco's original Dana axles and its manual shift transmission.

Positive Communication

Along with the all-electric powertrain, the Zero Labs carbon fiber Bronco includes an independent front and rear suspension, premium leather or vegan alternative upholstery, wood finishes, full vehicle telematics, and remote communication. Test drives of the early prototypes have been nothing but positive. The sticker price might be the real jolt, with configuration packages starting at a shocking $225k.
