3 Things Donald Trump Got Wrong About Ford Motor Company
No one puts Ford in a corner!
1. Ford Will Fire All of Their American Employees
While it's true that Ford plans on moving production of their small-car vehicles, like the Focus and C-Max, to factories in Mexico over the next two to three years, this does not mean that Ford will fire existing employees who work in American factories that currently produce these vehicles, namely the Wayne facility. In fact, Ford plans on transitioning this facility into producing their best-selling pickup trucks and SUVs primarily.
2. Tons of Ford Jobs in the U.S. Will Be Lost
Ford employees came to Ford's defense when Trump stated in a Presidential debate that a "tremendous" amount of Ford production jobs were going to be lost in the U.S. In actuality, Ford has created 28,000 new jobs in the U.S. since 2011, and there are nearly 500 open positions currently in the U.S just waiting to be filled. Today, there are 85,000 Ford employees in the U.S., and Ford aggressively claims that not one job will be lost, certainly not the thousands of jobs that Trump suggests.
3. There Should Be a Tariff on Ford Cars Built in Mexico
Should he become President, Donald Trump proposed a 35% tax on all cars that Ford builds in Mexico to sell in the U.S. Not only does the President lack the outright complete authority to enact a tariff like this right away (he would need approval from Congress), this would also damage the U.S. economy. Such a tax would cost Ford $2.8 billion dollars in just one year of imports, which is more than their profit for their most recent, very successful quarter. This wouldn't only spell financial disaster for one of America's most industrious and cherished car companies; it would inevitably make Ford cars more expensive for American consumers.
