Real Life

The Ford F-150 Lightning has earned its fair share of critical acclaim since its launch earlier this year, with just a few cons emerging from multiple reviewers. However, it's a different story when you actually own a vehicle and drive it every day versus merely spending a few hours or days with it, and that's precisely why we were interested to hear what Tom Moloughney of the YouTube channel State of Charge had to say about his ownership experience thus far.

Performance and Range

This particular owner has racked up 3,000 miles on his EV pickup, a total that includes a 1,000-mile road trip. As one might imagine, he's been impressed by the truck's power and performance thus far, particularly since he has the more powerful extended-range battery version. The truck's efficiency has also been a bonus, but then again, he isn't exactly towing heavy loads with it.

Comfy and Smooth

This owner has also enjoyed features such as the panoramic glass roof, the smooth ride that can be attributed to the truck's independent suspension, its quiet cabin, and rear seat legroom, as well as overall comfort in the plush pickup.

Rounding Out

Rounding out the "nice" list is the Lightning's regenerative braking coach, which helps drivers get the most out of their battery's range, its power liftgate and built-in step, the awesome Mega Power Frunk, and the Pro Power Onboard generator.

Cons

The F-150 Lightning isn't perfect by any means, of course, and this owner does have a few quibbles about it. Interestingly, that list includes the look of the front light bar, which is milky and opaque when it's not lit up. He also points out that there's no numeric state of charge on the display, and he's experienced some Android Auto connectivity issues to boot.

Other Complaints

Other issues our owner has experienced are related to the one pedal driving feature, torque steer from the front motor, a weak center console armrest spring, and access to the wireless charging pad, along with common issues like the fact that getting one's hands on a Lightning is pretty difficult (or at least expensive) these days.

Room to Improve

Regardless, Moloughney calls the F-150 Lightning "an amazing pickup truck," and it's been a positive experience owning one thus far. Obviously, this is also Ford's first effort at such a machine, and given the evolution of the ICE F-150 over time, it will likely only get better from here.
