2020 Bronco Mule Caught Out Testing in Detroit

For a while now, we have all been talking about the return of the legendary Bronco, and since there are now spy photos, the Bronco is probably almost ready for production. One thing is certain, it won't look like the classic Bronco you remember.

1. The Ford Bronco

From 1966 to 1996, the automotive market had a beloved two-door SUV named the Ford Bronco, built to compete with the International Scout and various Jeeps. The extremely capable 4WD became an instant hit, and America fell deeply in love with it just like they had with the Mustang a few years earlier. The SUV only came in a two door body style with the removable hardtop, though it could be a wagon, or a mini pickup truck. From 1978 until its discontinuation in 1996, it was larger and based on their F-150 truck. Ford announced that 2020 will mark the return of the Bronco, and we are all still eagerly awaiting details, or at least new spy shots like these.

2. Questions - Questions - Questions

Since Ford's first hint regarding the return of the Bronco, everyone in the automotive industry has been asking questions. Will it be two doors? Will the hardtop be removable? Will it be truck based? Will it be body on frame? Some said the 2020 Ford Bronco will come with removable roof panels, some said there will be no two-door model. Others claimed it would compete with today's Wrangler with an exclusively two-door body. Many claimed it would share the same platform as the new Ford Ranger, which is about to make a comeback, while still others said it would be a Raptor based SUV.

3. Is the New Bronco Based on the Everest?

In 2003, Ford introduced an SUV called Everest, available everywhere but North America, a mid-sized model based on the Ford Ranger. But, in an interview with Raj Nair, Ford'd Chief Technical Officer, he emphasized that the 2020 Bronco will be unique from the Everest. Hopefully Raj wasn't playing with our feelings, because these spy shots look awfully close to the Everest. The source of these spy shots from Motor Trend is sure this is the test mule for the Bronco spotted Michigan.

4. 2020 Ford Bronco

Before we all get angry, sources claim the testing of the 2020 Ford Bronco seen here is focused on the powertrain, which would mean this body is just an Everest with a powertrain that will eventually be installed in the Bronco. The spy shots also showed the new Ranger being tested, which should hit the market a year before the Bronco. We didn't expect the Bronco to only come with two-doors, but we also didn't expect it to look like the Everest.

5. Engine Options

It is expected the 2020 Ford Bronco will come with the same engines as the Ford Ranger, which would make sense since they share the same platform. The base engine might be a 2.0-liter EcoBoost l-4, with customers able to upgrade to a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine, or a 3.2-liter Power Stroke l-5 diesel option. Both the Ranger and the Bronco should come with serious off-road options and maybe even a mini Raptor type version. The anticipation is killing us, and these spy shots aren't helping. We just want to see it already.
