Truck

The F-150 is Fords bestselling vehicle. It is offered with five gasoline engine choices, but now we also have a choice of a 3.0 liter diesel.

Engine

The diesel only puts out 250 horsepower but makes up for it in torque output. Not only do we get a healthy 440 lbs./ft. of torque, but at a low 1750 rpm. At 75 mph hour highway cruising, this F-150 was running 1750 rpm on the nose, so this means the truck never needed to downshift when driving up steep mountain grades, as it had maximum pulling power on hand. For comparison, the 3.5-liter gas EcoBoost motor puts out slightly more torque at 470 lb./ft. but needs to crank 3500 rpm to do so.

Transmission

The diesel comes standard with the new 10-speed automatic transmission found on other F-150 engines.

Economy

Fuel economy is rated at 30 mpg highway in 2-wheel drive. With its 4x4 driveline, this drops to 20/25 mpg. In over 800 miles of driving, this engine averaged 22.3 mpg. This is an impressive figure for a large truck.

Price Sheet

The base price of a Ford F-150 starts at $28K. This was a SuperCrew platinum version loaded up with all the factory goodies, so reached $69,020. The cost of the diesel is listed at $3K, but this is over the 5.0 V-8 which adds $2K over the base 3.3 liter V-6. So the actual cost of the diesel is closer to $5K. Still, with fuel savings over the gas V-8, the diesel will pay for itself in about 60K miles.

Driving Modes

This knob provides 2-wheel drive, all-wheel drive for the street, 4x4 high, and 4x4 low. Pulling the control out activates locking differentials. This assisted in getting this truck out of thick mud we got stuck in!

For several days, this truck was driven in a desert climate. This included sand, rocks, and narrow mule trails. It never failed.
