Father-Son Project

Father-son projects are amazing bonding experiences. There are times when building a car could mend the relationship between estranged family members. Other times, these joint ventures are undertaken because of a common passion for cars between a child and a parent. The story of the Harrell boys is an example of the latter.

Runs in the Family

Kevin Harrell grew up with a wrench in his hand. In fact, his first-ever vehicle was a 1978 Ford truck that his parents purchased in '79, and eventually gifted to him as a high school graduation present. He Went to work tinkering with and modifying everything he could on that truck, turning it into a trophy hunter on the weekends.

The Young Man's Project

Fast forward to when Kevin's son, Richard was born. Even at a young age, Richard gravitated toward automobiles. Whether it was the influence of his father, or that it simply runs in the family, the young Harrell has come of age enjoying working on and showing off the truck alongside his dad. And when he was getting old enough to drive, Kevin knew it was time to get the young man a truck of his own.

Great Starting Point

With $3,000 in hand and a matching amount from his father, Richard pulled the trigger on purchasing the 1974 F-100, which they found on an auction website. When they made the trip to pick up the truck, they realized it was in way better shape than they had imagined. This meant Richard had a great starting point for the father-son project.

Low to the Ground

The first order of business was getting the new suspension system in there and lowering the ride height. An air ride system went, bringing the truck as low as it can go without any major modifications to the body and chassis. Next, the duo turned their attention to the cosmetic enhancements. Custom grille, replica Bullitt Mustang wheels, as well as custom paint, touches all around brought the truck to life.

Modern Power

Modern power was employed in the form of a 5.0-liter V8 from Jasper engines. With modified cold air intake and Mustang fuel injection, the truck can send reliable power down to the wheels via the 4-speed transmission and the 9-inch Ford rear end. Putting everything back together, getting the truck up and running, and show-ready took some time. But the end results are worth the time and effort. Future plans for the project include increased power from the side exit exhaust and a supercharger!
