Still on Max A/C air quits blowing under load on a 1998
I'm still trying to diagnose why my a/c on my 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5 quits blowing under load. But only in the max a/c setting. I've had this problem before and it was a leaking engine compartent vacuum hose harness to the cab. I checked it twice now and it's still good since replacing it a few years ago. I'm not hearing any noise under the dash that would suspect a malfunctioning door or actuator. I smoke tested the gray/black vacuum harness leading into the cab and I didn't find a leak. The engine was off and the setting was still on max a/c. I don't know if it matters if the engine is running. It seems to quit blowing totally under load or basically right around 50 mph. The a/c works fine idling and in any other setting but max a/c. I've replaced the heater valve under warranty and replaced the vacuum reservoir ball with a new one. I even smoke tested the engine vacuum harness to make sure it wasn't leaking. No leaks. I tried to test the actuator behind the glove box because that's the only one I can get to. It seemed to hold, but slowly bleeds down after a few minutes. I don't know if it's supposed to do that. The truck is running fine and the a/c will freeze you out, it just disappears in max a/c under a load. My usual mechanic has moved far away so I'm trying to figure out what I can. What else can I check?
I wonder if it is freezing up. I have had a truck that would cool really well but would soon stop blowing when ice froze in the evaporator. If I turned the A/C off it would soon melt and blow again. There should be a sensor that cycles the A/C when the air gets close to freezing, but perhaps max A/C overrides that sensor.
I know it's not that. I've had that before and it was a leak. I reworked the a/c system fully a few years ago, replacing everything but the a/c condenser. Although I did have that checked for leaks, cleaned, flushed, and painted by a radiator repair shop. The a/c gets colder than my 2019 Jeep Renegade and much more powerful. It's something going on with the vacuum but I'm having trouble tracking it down. I just hope it's not one of the door actuators that you can't get to without taking the dash off.
