Hello, I need to add transmission fluid for my F100, Late 1977, 4WD converted from 2WD, flareside converted from styleside, standard cab. 385 series V8, either 429 or 460 (not the original engine). I don’t know if the transmission is original or not.
I need advice on which type of transmission fluid to purchase.
Also can I add the fluid down the dipstick tube?
I’m new to engine maintenance, so any advice is appreciated.
Transmission dipstick is near the cab of the truck
Do you recommend any specific brand? Anything else I need to know for transmission fluid (for example, the oil it needs to be high in zinc for an older engine)?
Yes it will go in the dipstick . and like it says on the stick check it warm and at an idle. I don't think brand makes much difference but usually you get what you pay for.
the best oil for flat tappets you can find easily is Valvoline VR1 . I'd use 10-30 . unless you're in real warm area, or if your engine has some miles on it then use 20-50.
