Transmission for my '56 panel

I am actually making some progress on my panel that I sold about 26 years ago then bought back about 8 years ago. Recently I posted that I bought a 300 six for it. Now I have bought what I thought was a deal in a transmission but might not be able to use it. The trans is a 4R70W. It turns out that I need a controller that cost several hundred dollars to use the trans, unless someone can tell me another option. If not I will dispose of the 4R70W and find a C4 or C6.
Thanks.

It is true the 4R70W is a computer controlled transmission, an improved version of the AODE, which is the electronic version of the original AOD. It does require a control box of some kind to make it work. The good ones are closing in on a grand, these days. If you want the overdrive and the associated benefits, smooth and quiet driving with increased gas mileage, you can bite the bullet and buy the box. Other OD alternatives would be to find a late 90's AOD with the better upgrades but no electronics, but you'll still have the TV cable adjustment to master. Some guys have successfully adapted GM overdrives to their Ford engines, but that's a whole other expense and conversation. If you don't care about 4th gear, then of course, the C4 or C6 is an option. None of the options are cheap, and if you need to rebuild any of these transmissions, that will exceed the cost of the controller for the 4R70W, assuming it's in a plug and play condition now. Things to think about.

I would assume that a 300 6, with all it's torque, would do fine with a non overdrive trans and 2.75 to 3.00 rear gear. My 56 has a 300 with a M5R2 5 speed stick and 3.92 rear. I figure that with the 5th gear overdrive the math sz it's like a roughly 3.20 gear. I could go with a higher gear but the limiting factor for speed on mine is the original steering/suspension. I never even use 1st. You'll like the 300.

I don't really think I need the overdrive, so I should have waited and found a C6. My truck has a Mopar 8.75 rear geared 2.76. I'm confident the trans I bought is good so I will advertise it locally and see if I can sell it.

I think that rear gear will be perfect with a non-overdrive trans. Do you have a build thread ? I will follow it if you do.

At this point I would be happy to find either non-overdrive automatic.
