I have a sterling 10.25 Full floater which is basically an open rear at this point. Swapping the carrier looks a little to easy and I'm afraid I'm missing something here. Ring and pinion are good. I didn't measure the backlash yet but it seems minimal.
Can I just slide the axles out, swap in a Detroit Tru-Trac, shim it to get the same backlash, maybe a hair tighter, and it's done?
Check the combined preload, gear pattern and backlash first before disassembly. Tru-Trac carrier should be very close to same dimension brg to brg as open carrier so just new carrier brgs with new shims ought to get you there. Recheck pattern, backlash & preload, will be higher but not much, to be sure. Keep backlash same spec if towing at all.
