HI everyone. I'm new to owning my "Old Ford pickup truck". I have a 1989 Ford F150. I want desperately to change the tailgate. Can anyone help me? Lead me in the right direction to finding an interchangeable tailgate for my 1989 truck. I want the vintage tailgate that says F O R D. Is this possible? Are there ways to do this?
here is a Bullnose (1980-1986) these tailgates CAN work if you match the hardware (do you have cables, you should have cables?) to do this you would need the metal strap design and the cup design features to be harmonized to your bed design. heres some of the bullnose setups, the one for your year is 1982 is the last year for this 1983-1986
if you consider the large F O R D thats applied via decal to be "vintage" then your truck could have come with it
but if you want the F O R D from like the 70s maybe 80s that is recessed into the sheet metal, you will need to swap beds in order to have the body lines on the bed match the tailgate, or you would need to change the moutning hardware if the 80s beds tailgate were to fit.
if you dont want the tailgate to obviously not be a match to your truck, you can just use the later bullnose tailgate design with the ford logo. but the appearance wont look right. if you dontc care, go ahead. if you use the bullnose bed, your cab and bed will look odd together but if painted riht it wont be sour thumb in my view because then the bed matches the tailgate. but the fuel filler will have to be made sure to work, not sure about the work for that. and the tailights are differrently wired too, so there would be changes. Otherwise if you have a flat tailgate, yours can have the Decal "FORD" like a lot of other bricknoses had factory

If yours has the metal trim in the middle, remove it and fill the holes. Mine has FORD stamped in it.
True but that requires bodywork and paint. Maybe the OP or bot can find one in the correct color. I’m confused by the desperation in going from the higher option tailgate to an entry level tailgate.

the brick nose I’m pretty sure had the same look tailgates did they not ? Or is it from a brick?
