Can I please get your input on this 01?

Hello everyone. I've fallen for an 01 Excursion that I came across online. Its recently been repainted and the interior refreshed. Motor is stock and well maintained. It is more than I want to spend but I'm thinking that it could be an investment that I can enjoy driving around (not as a DD) for a few years that I can (hopefully) sell for a profit given the demand for these in the 7.3. I've had an 03 F350 SRW 7.3 in the past and loved it but I don't have experience with the Excursions aside from what I've read online. This one has had the front coil conversion which I'm new to so I'm curious what your collective thoughts/consensus is about the truck's setup. It looks like it was originally a 2WD truck, however, it has a 4WD axle and is set up for 2WD because the previous owner to the current owner towed a boat with it and got much better MPG. I live in Florida and am not overly concerned about having 4WD but I am wondering how it would impact resale if I leave it as is. I do realize that the market is a little overinflate and that parts are getting harder to find but I don't think I'd be keeping it for more than 2-5 years. Can you please let me know what you think?

Thanks!

IMHO, Big red flag- it's been recently "repainted"- Paining a vehicle isn't cheap, typically $1k just for materials...... so the 1st thing that comes to my mind is what are they covering up! $60k invested- Hmmm, this really doesn't sound right to me. Alot of aftermarket parts obviously with the suspension.....this is either really good or really badIMHO for any modern day vehicle..

1. Take it to a frame shop to have it inspected for damage and proper repair

2. Take it to a mechanic to not only scan for codes but to allow them to look "deep" into the code history which will tell what codes, when and how many times.

Thanks for the feedback. You make a very valid point. Carfax shows three accidents/incidents with this one happening in 2022.
05/13/2022
  • Accident reported
    • Vehicle involved in a rear-end collision with another motor vehicle
    • Functional damage reported
    • Airbags did not deploy

I believe that the new paint job was done by the previous owner about a year ago.

Current owner has had it for about 6-7 months. I got the impression that he is a car collector with money to spend but supposedly he has some health issues preventing him from driving much now and that's why its being sold.

I question the "originally 4WD and can be returned if you buy a t-case"... WTF? Big NO from me. I had an 02 Ex 7.3/4WD and for no reason would I take the t-case out and make it 2WD, if he's got money to spend, I wouldn't help him make some back by paying the price for that one...

Thanks for the response. It was originally 2WD according to the VIN so I think something might have been lost in translation of the history of it or something shady like you suspect. They're saying that they have lots of paperwork and receipts so I'm not sure just yet.

You can't just add the transfer case to make it 4wd again. You would have to take the 2wd transmission apart and install the 4wd tail shaft housing to accept the transfer case...btw it's probably easier to just buy a 4wd transmission...

Looks like they should be saying is was originally a 2 wd, converted to 4 wd, then partially returned to 2 wd.
