3.5L V6 Ecoboost vs. 5.0 v8

Probably been discussed before, but what are the pros and cons of each ?
Those w 3.5; anybody wish they had the V8? And vice versa?
I am old school (and just plain old), and like a V-8, but have heard great and wonderful things about the 3.5.

I think you should drive both types to form your opinion. If I were in the market for a .5 ton it would be a hard decision for me as well given, I'm pro V8 and there days are limited so this maybe the last opportunity and the torque of the 3.5 is impressive.

^^^^ Agree with above. The only thing I miss is the sound. Wish I could make the 3.5 sound like the stang!

The 3.5 eats the 5.0 for dinner but both engines have their place. Like posted above drive both and the pick the one you like best.

Twin turbo a 5.0 and spend some bucks on upgraded internals. And just have a legit truck with 1100 HP. And make sure to enjoy the freedom ponys.

In the real world. 3.5 relies on boost. Turbo cost more than a rebuilt motor in some cases. The 3.5 will also clap out. From the boost and displacement. I guess the question is. Do you hate yourself. Or do you want a 5.0?

Don't get the 3.5EB for fuel economy. I'm not seeing anything north of 19MPG in my PowerBoost hybrid. I'm guessing that the 5.0L will get you close to the same MPG if you drive it nicely.

I only got the PB because I wanted the 7.2kW Pro-Power generator. If I could've gotten that with the 5.0 I probably would've gotten that engine. 5.0 is a great engine. It puts the "motor" in Ford Motor Company.

I have had both 5.0 and 3.5 EB. I won't argue the power and torque numbers. The fuel economy was about the same between 5.0 and 3.5 EB. The 5.0 always felt more powerful. The 3.5 does what Ford says it will do for speed or towing heavy. I had two 3.5s that I took up to around 125k miles each, tough life sometimes pushed hard and sometimes idling a lot, and neither had any mechanical problems other than coil packs. No problems with the 5.0s either. Personally, I don't like the idea of spending more money for the EB, and I don't like having a V6 with twin turbos having to work extra hard and create extra heat just to replace a NA V8. I prefer the 5.0 over 3.5 EB.

I've had both as well. Two 2019 3.5's, one a company truck and one personal. The power is great and MPG's were good.16-17 in town, 20-23 freeway. New work truck is a 5.0, MPG's are pretty much the same. Power comes on faster with 3.5 but seat of the pants feels they are close and 5.0 sounds great (not piped in engine sound). Don't kid yourself though if you're thinking the 5.0 is a simple V8. It's not and I'd say they are equally complicated but in different ways. I like them both but if the 5.0 is a cheaper option, I'd go with it. I wish I didn't need a superduty otherwise I'd be happy with the a 5.0 f150.

I've had two 5.0 and one 3.5. The mileage, mostly highway, is better on both V8s than the 3.5. I can regularly get 21+ with the V8 and never got 20 with the 3.5. I prefer the V8.

I’ve been a Diesel F350 guy for 27yrs & HATE downshifting of a Gas truck so I Absolutely Love the Torque of wife’s 3.5L Expo & F150

But we don’t put many miles on a vehicle & would be scared of a Eco Boost North of a 100k miles.

No way I’d want a 3.5L PowerBoost option.

No question the 5.0 V8 would be less troublesome AND have a much longer life as mentioned.

IDK why FoMoCo doesn’t Twin Turbo the 5.0L AND 7.3L for us Torque Lovers under 2k rpm

I have the 3.5 in my TREMOR. I have gotten as much as 22 MPG on a trip with the 3,5. I never got close to 20 MPG with my 2016 5.0. Both eco-boost engines did better in the MPG department than my 5.0.

The V8s are in a 2018 and 2023 F150 with the 10 speed. The 3.5 was in a 2019 Expedition also with the 10 speed. IMO the 3.5 is near the top of its capability while the V8 is at the lower end of its capability. For example, with a few modifications you can squeeze a little more power from the 3.5 and other modifications nearly double the power of the V8. (I haven't modified any of mine.) Both are good motors, it really comes down to personal preference and for me I like the V8.

I doubt the 5.0 can be turbo'ed without substantial hit to the mpg numbers.

Add forced induction to the 7.3 gas v8 will threaten sales and thus margins of the powerstroke SDs.

I think I am going to stick with my gut instinct. If I buy another truck, it will have the V8.
