Thinking of switching to gas

I'm seriously considering trading my 2015 F350 CCSB with a 6.7L for a new/used CCSB 6.2L. Yes, the upcoming 7.3L sounds awesome but do I really want to be a new model tester? Meh, it will probably be ok anyway but the main consideration I have is the age old gas vs diesel debate. I've owned my 2015 for less than two years & have only put 9k miles on it, it sits almost all winter, I'll use it every once in a while over the weekend during the winter but I have a work vehicle that I typically drive. I only drive it in the summer on the weekends mostly, I won't run a 5 minute errand with it, in fact I probably won't drive it unless I can get it up to operating temp & run it for a few miles. This 6.7L replaced my old 6.0L (which I absolutely loved) to tow our camper about 3000 miles per year. We just bought a new fifth wheel this year but it's a "half ton" towable Grand Design that's 34'11" & 10k loaded, the 6.7L tows it with absolute authority but I do know that it's total overkill. So my thoughts are to get into the new chassis but save the money & buy a gas version. I test drove a 6.2L with the 3.73's recently & was impressed, I actually liked the way it sounded when revved out, very hot rod-ish, the ride was better than my '15, didn't wander when hitting expansion joints & overall felt very nimble for 1 ton truck. The gas mileage sucks, I know this but my average over the last 9k miles in the 6.7L is exactly 12.4 mpg which is also pretty sucky plus diesel is a .60 cent per gallon upcharge over regular gas.

So I'm at a crossroads really, I don't NEED a diesel & I'm not even sure that I want one anymore but I am concerned about losing the equity I currently have in my diesel if I purchase a gas job, they don't retain the same value on trade but they don't cost as much either. Also, if I had a gas truck I'd let the wife drive it & maybe get rid of her car, seems like such a waste to have a truck just sitting in the driveway with full insurance & a payment on it not being used. The 6.2L with 3.73 felt pretty good going down the road but unfortunately there are no units with factory fifth wheel prep and/or 4.30's to test with my camper. I'd need to order or locate one & even with that they haven't found much for 4.30 trucks sitting on the lot in New England & no factory fifth wheel preps at all. In other words it would be a pretty big risk for me to take hoping that it would work out. Soooooo, am I crazy or just have a case of new truck-itus?

Don't feel bad, way to many people buy diesels that don't need them, Its a testerone thing If I had a really fat wallet might buy one myself in the future.

That being said, dump it while you can, I just don't see used 6.7's as increasing in value as time goes on. Don't settle. Find the exact truck you want or order one or you will be right back in the same boat a year from now.

Just be prepared to really notice that "gas milage is gonna suck". With my F250, 3.73, towing a '1/2 ton towable' fiver, the MPG drops to around 7.9. With only a 34 gallon tank on the CCSB, I'm pretty much only getting 200 miles or so before I feel I need to fuel up. Combine that with limited options for fiver friendly gas pumps, it takes a lot of pre-planning your stops to make sure you're not stuck somewhere.

That's a worry of mine, currently I have the 26 gallon tank & average 10mpg while towing. We have a 1500 mile trip planned for this August & I was going to purchase a 30 gallon auxiliary tank for the bed but I know that is not an option for a gas rig. We don't do big trips like the one we have planned but it would be nice to not have to worry about dragging 34' through gas pumps.

You could get a long bed with the 48 gallon tank......

That is a possibility if I could find one on the lot. I did find a KR with a long bed but unfortunately it's a little over budget & has 3.73's. I didn't even bother test driving it but probably should have. It DID have a factory fifth wheel set up though.

From what little looking I've done, you're not going to find what you want sitting on a lot. Especially in a gas truck. Double-especially if you're looking for 4.30 gears. Best bet is to order one, just the way you want it. So far, (knock on wood), I've never been stuck getting my gas truck/5th wheel combo "stuck" in a tight gas pump situation. Most modern stations are set up pretty well. Keep in mind, they have to have a way for the gasoline delivery truck to get there and transfer the gas into the storage tanks. And it seems to me the gas stations along most highway routes are set up well enough for larger RV's to get around in.

I came from a gas 6.0 GM 2500HD and although it was a great truck, our 10k trailer needed a little more grunt. I wanted a diesel but I also had a budget. It was either a basic xlt PSD or a nicely optioned out Lariet 6.2. I tow 6 months out of the year and drive less then 5 miles a day round trip to work. Most camping trips are an hour away with one large 2500 mile trip a year. I couldn't justify buying all motor for the very few times I would need it. In the end I ordered a 19 Lariet F350 6.2 4.30. I was nervous at first being a gas motor still but the very first trip picking up our 10k trailer and 14k lbs boat from winter storage I had knew I made the right decision. Truck tows the loads perfectly and our 2500 mile trip this past June with our camper proved I could hold 65mph up a certain grade where our old 6.0 would only muster 50ish. Completely satisfied. The same grade I could do 65 in 4th gear with 10k, my uncle with his 17 F350 6.2 373 does the same 65 and holds it with a 12500 5er in 3rd gear. Mines the red.and his is the white. He recently ordered the identical truck in a 19 and actually stuck with the 373s and he likes the way it tows. I didnt question it. Its a company truck so they swap them out every 2 to 3 years.

I tow a 38ft bumper pull. 6.2l cclb 4.30 gears. Ordered her plain Jane xlt. Nothing more and nothing less than I wanted. Vinyl floors manual shift 4x4. Pretty much simple functional truck. 48 gals is sweet. I get 8-9 pulling camper. I pull at 65mph. I can do 4-5 hours of driving on one tank pulling. By then I'm ready to stretch and so are the kids and wife. My brother has similar truck only a short bed and 3.73. He loves his as well. He pulls a shorter TT. Around 32 ft. I have been in some tight situations with camper and truck but nothing I couldn't handle. So dont worry pick your line and let people wait or move out of your way.

I can’t make the numbers work. It’s a 9-10k upgrade for Diesel engine and you’ll pay 4-5 k in taxes plus the taxes on the new truck plus the equity gone and trade in value lost. You’re going to have a much stronger truck with better resale value down the road by keeping the diesel.

Fortunately we don’t have state sales taxes where I live but we do have pretty stiff registration costs so it will cost a few bucks there. The loss of equity & trade value is a worry, not sure how to work around that unfortunately.

I just love how a bunch of the PSD guys say "I wont own a diesel out of warranty" or I trade in every 4 to 5 years ,or if your going to own one, get the extended plan warranty. Sure makes me want to buy a used one! I'd be scared ****less to buy a newer emissions diesel with no warranty and neating 100k miles.

I made the switch, Ordered a 4004 PSD. Had no issues out of warranty. sold it to my Dad for a $1.Then ordered a 2018 6.2 4.30. And it has been great. Pulling my jeep around. 0 REGRETS. The funny thing is i have never test drove a truck.
