2020 Super Duty 10 Speed Transmission

It looks as though the Torq-Shift 6 is going to be replaced with an all new 10 speed automatic transmission. I am a little surprised by this, the Torq-Shift 6 has been one of the best heavy duty automatics ever built and I was thinking Ford was at least going to base their new 10 speed on it. Now I am hearing rumors that the new 10 speed might just be the upcoming 10 speed Allison GM will have in their diesel HD's in 2020. I know that GM and Ford collaborated on the light duty 10 speed that's now in the F-150, but this new transmission is not based on it.

I’ll be very happy to let everyone know how it goes. I’m not one to worry about the boogie man..
Waiting “no so” patiently for the 2020 order banks to open..

My wife’s Yukon Denali shifts so seamless and perfect, shifts are unnoticeable. I’m expecting the same with the HD.
Wonder why more gears are better? For those class 8 drivers out there, the 18 speed Autoshift is a great example. It allows tuners to calibrate power into a narrow target area, and the transmission to keep it right in the sweet spot.

I wouldn't worry about it. Ford and GM co-developed 9 and 10 speed transmissions. Ford took the lead on the 10; GM took the lead on the 9. Of course there is the light duty 10 speed and the unseen heavy duty 10 speed. The new "10 speed Allison transmission" (HD) is just Allison signing off on Ford's, and GM's, engineering and testing. I read years ago that the old 5r110 was better than the Allison. Transmissions have come a long way this century.

Ford didnt really codevelop much with GM. The 9 speed Ford doesnt even use.. Ford went with an 8 speed for their fwd vehicles and from what I have read, GM is having issues with their 9 speeds (good move on Ford's part).

Ford has done a great job on their transmissions in the last two generations. The 5R110 is an excellent transmission and was vastly superior to the 4R100. The 6R140 has proven itself as good or better than the Allison. I expect the HD 10 speed to be just as good.

The 6R140 in my truck has been perfect and with the 6.7's available torque a 10 speed seems unnecessary. The only thing I would want is another overdrive on top of the current 6th for a more relaxed cruise and a bump in fuel mileage.

The Allison in my 2002 GMC is the best part about that truck and that one is a 5 speed. Towing it is far an away the best controlled and behaved A/T I have ever used. If Ford puts an Allison behind any motor, I'm first in line.

fords new FWD transmission did start life as a 9 speed, but part way through the roll out, they opted for a minor redesign, and resulted with an 8 speed configuration. I don't claim to have the best knowledge off how these modern transmissions work, they are no longer simply 9 cogs lined up in a row, I was told that the change was the removal of a single clutch pack, resulting in one less combination of gears. I'm just glad they did not have me go into a database and change 1000+ 9's to 8's for the system I work on.

Today, Transmission behavior comes from electronic programming. Those good old days are gone...

Your sources are always reliable..
So....what else have you learned about the 2020?

I do not have a ton of info on this trans. Are you saying production starts in November or are you saying it will be available to order in Nov?

i thought production was starting in Aug/Sep from what I read when they announced it at the trans plant.

Yeah, if true, that kinda sucks. I would like to take possession in August and get a few months of clean weather running before having to deal with snow, salt and mounting a plow. If true, I may delay my order and recieve a spring delivery.

You won't take possession of a 2020 with 10 speed in August, that I can guarantee you. It will be "late availability" when the 2020 is launched and even if they get a Aug/Sep production of the trans, it will still take time to make it to KTP and be available for builds. That's why I was asking if they meant November availability or if the production startup of the trans moved from Aug/Sep to Nov. Either way, I wouldn't expect to see them with the 10 speed till the end of the year.

Just checked the https://www.donlen.com/buildstart-trucks-ford.html site and they still have the 2020 production start up date as KTP:11/04/2019 and OHAP: 11/18/2019.
