Hey ya'll, I need some help. Been running SCT hot street or tow tune since delete when the truck had less than 200 miles. 75k on it now. Put it on regular street tune Thursday night to see what kind of mileage I could get and drove the 100 miles home. Drove 100 miles back to work Friday morning and was blowing white smoke out exhaust. Don't know if it was smoking Thursday night or when I left the house Friday since it was dark and I wasn't really paying attention. Checked primary coolant tank. Called my bride and talked her into bringing me some pre-mixed from my shop and added about a gallon. Put it back in hot street mode. Drove home Friday night and added another half gallon. Oil is just starting to darken up after oil change last week, but no water in it. No oil or diesel in degas tank. Doesn't smoke all the time, but you can really smell the coolant when it does. Haven't pushed it very hard lately, hasn't gotten hot, coolant was full at oil change last week. No coolant drips, valley is dry. Pressured system today and lost about a pint out of the tank. Found it as soon as I started it. Big billowing clouds of coolant steam. I've lost head gaskets before, but always had emulsion in oil pan or popped a coolant line from over pressure, and a constant steam cloud when running. EGR is sitting on a pallet with the DPF so that can't be it. If I had any hair left I'd be pulling it out. What do ya'll think?
If pressure testing squeezed out a pint but didn't put any on the ground then the motor needs torn apart. I wouldn't feel comfortable running it. Might be relatively cheap and easy to fix or might be something bad. Either way, the coolant is getting inside a cylinder.
That’s kinda what I was thinking. Had to take my bride’s truck to work today for fear of doing permanent damage. Is there any way coolant could get around the ERG block off plate?
I agree. Seems like pulling the heads is a good idea, probably could be able to spot the cylinder taking the AF. Also sounds like a lot of work for a DIY'er. Doesn't sound like a warrant-able issue either given the tuning that has been done. Let us know what you find out.
It’s a 2015. The EGR has been deleted and in the junk pile. I had a 2011 that gave me zero problems until the turbo went out at 165k. Was hoping this one would last as long. I put the retrofit ‘15 turbo kit on it and sold it. Far as I know it’s still going strong.
Pulled glow plugs on left bank. Cranked it over key off and blew coolant out of #1 cyl. 1st question is should I do both HG, 2nd question was about resurfacing the head, but I think that’s probably the only way to feel comfortable. Mind you this will be done in my shop after a 12 hour shift and drive time. But still think it’ll be quicker than the “we can look at it in a couple weeks” I get from the shops around here.
Ford remain heads are under $600 ea. I would probably do both head gasket and remain heads. 2015 head install kit is on a national back order. It's all the gaskets, fuel lines, and such.
are you going to do it with the cab on?
It’ll all be cab on. Right bank looks like it’ll be a real booger to get off, but it looks doable. Hadn’t thought about reman heads. That might be a little rich for my blood though.
