Plug with Helicoil Sav-A-Thread came out while running

Was pulling boat back 3 hour drive from lake weekend yesterday and plug blew. When I looked at it it was one that had been repaired with a Timesert before as the insert was on the plug and had no alluminum on threads so I thought I would try putting it back in. Went right back in and tightened in fine. Should I put in a new Timesert?

Are you sure it was a Timesert? Sounds like someone didn't follow the directions.

I went to remove it last night with a completely cold engine and it was real tight now. It sure looked like one. Going to warm engine up and try it that way in a few days.

A properly installed timesert should not come out. Don't confuse a timesert with a helicoil.

Timeserts can take some abuse when propery installed. ModularHeadShop Articles on TimeSert Abuse

I bet it is a HElicoil. I will warm it up and remove it and install a Timesert. I have the kit and 2 inserts.

Is there a locking compound that keeps it from coming out?

they are supposed to be put in with Permatex thread locker. I am going to put a new one back in and use the Permatex.

What material was the insert made out of?

Timesert recommends some sort of thread locker, like Permatex/Loctite brand. More than likely red.

looked steel. I will take a pic and post it when I get it back out. Likely int he next week. I was watching the Timsert video and saw a note that copper color and silver coler timserts are different. the silver is a tapered type. What are we supposed to use in the V10?

There are several different companies making inserts and some are steel. I'm pretty sure all the timeserts for the modulars are aluminum. The aluminum insert will match the expansion and contraction rates of the aluminum head better than a steel insert. Timesert does make standard and oversize inserts. Kit # 5553 is for the 2V 4.6l, 5.4l and 6.8l modulars. http://www.timesert.com/html/fordsp-note.html

It ended up being the Helicoil Sav-A-thread product.

Well what you going to put back in there and are you going to have to oversize it to repair it?
