I believe some early 99s came with cats and I know the manual transmission trucks came with cats 99.5 and up auto shouldn't have a cat unless it's a California truck. I believe the valve covers will also say whether or not you're factory equipped with a cat.
my label is on the hood lip underside and says NON CATALYST with a bunch of codes from the apcd. In my area, cats weren't installed on manuals until '02
Any opinions on whether the engine benefits from no cat ? ... more boost, better fuel mileage, etc...
Probably both. A cat and muffler are both restrictive. Mine didn't come with a cat, but removing the muffler gained me 2-3lbs of boost and quicker spool. The mileage may have gone up, but it was around the LSD to ULSD switch so its hard to tell.

As for the sticker, I'm still wondering what they would say, so pictures are appreciated The truck does not have a cat on it at all right now. It has an aftermarket 4" system. So I can't gut it and reinstall in for him. But i could and might try the junk yard for one if we have to.
sorry i didnt get home till late last night....I'll try to get the pic today tho
