Anyone know the O-Ring size for the water pump outlet tube?
Anyone know what dash # the o ring is on the pipe that faces down from the pump?
I had a dripping coolant leak and it was coming from the water pump area. I bought a new pump from Napa since the old one has about 100,000 on it. Once I got the serp belt out of the way I could see that the coolant was originating from the seal between the pump housing and the pipe that points down. I pulled off the pipe and found an old crusty o ring that was now small and square (cross section) instead of big and round. I spent about 15 mins carefully sanding the o ring groove in the water pump housing and then put the new o ring and down pipe from the new water pump kit on. Now no leak, but I want to get another o ring to put with my new pump on "the shelf."
Cool. Thanks Kris. I don't think you gave it to me since mine just started leaking late last week. Do you happen to know the Parker # so we can get them from McMaster-CARR or somewhere cheaper than the dealer?
That's cool. I might end up buying the one from the dealer and then measuring it up and finding the Parker number to share with everyone. This should be in the same bag as the spare HPOP and FUEL DRAIN o rings...
When mine started to leak I went to Carquest to get one. What they gave me was the same one for the t-stat housing. It was what their book called for. It actually worked so good, that when my waterpump went out, I used it again.
Get out the calipers and measure it. Look in the Mcmaster Carr catalog and find the one that matches. At that size, the steps are kinda' big, and it's not likely you'll get the wrong ID ring. Measure the diameter of the material very carefully, though.
Choose your material wisely, too. Buna will work in this application, but if you change coolant types, it might not. Viton, while more expensive, is usually a good bet.
Let us know for sure, 'cause Alan is recording the different o-ring sizes used on the 444 over at 7point3.com. Take a look at what he has got so far. If you come back with the AS568 dash number, I'll be happy to add it over there to the list for you.
UPDATE: I used Kris' part number and went to the local dealer to get the o ring. I ended up getting a thermostat gasket as well.
The Ford o ring for the lower pipe is not a round o ring. It is flat on the side up against the pipe, and chamferred on the outside top and bottom. After measuring the height at 0.111" and the width at 0.078" and the ID *I think* at 2.500" the closest item in the McMaster-Carr catalog is a dash 144 o ring. It's width is 0.103". I think after seeing the factory o ring, it is probably best to keep a spare one of them since it's about $6 at the dealer. The McMaster o ring would probably work, but I would use it in an emergency only.
Here is the two o rings, one for the lower pipe and one for the thermo.
And a closer shot showing a little of the shape...
the lower pipe one looks similar to the Fuel filter O-ring. not size, but with teh beveled part.
off a bit of topic, but I replaced my thermo one and it leaked so folks suggested using RTV. my question is what if, some of that sealant gets in your coolant system when you mate the housing back on??? are there any ill affects?
I was looking at the degas bottle on my truck today, and noticed that it has gotten quite the bit of abuse of me laying on it. I must say it handles 280 lbs layin on it but its gonna break soon. I wonder if i can get one out of the 6ohs and mount it somewhere else, so i wont have to lay on it anymore?
