well guys, I did a thing....

what are the Mercury truck owners doing on here?? so I'm building (or thought I was) my dream truck.... something 70's on a '79 F250 frame with 60's front and rear, with a bumpside body on... so I have the frame, and the 1 ton axles, and just brought home a 1968 Mercury M100, because me being a true Canuck, I had to build me a canadian based/built rig! seems simple right? but of course, the truck I bought, a 1968 Mercury M100, is apparently 1 of only 334 built on Ontario before Ford cancelled the program in May of '68 and started building Ford trucks here.... this rig runs and drives, big 6 and the manual 3spd now floor shift, not sure if I have the heart to break down a truck good enough to restore being so rare vs what I intended?? what do you all think? body is tough forsure, but I was going the restomod route anyway, leaving the what looks like Robin Egg blue peaking out from behind the poorly done flat black, just spruce up the interior so wifey will ride with me, not flintstone style! finding Merc related trucks parts.... yeah right! tailgate anyone??

If it were me, I would restore the Mercury 100. As you say it was only 1 of 334 made, so how many of those 334 are still around? This would make it even more desirable as an original truck.

Restoration may be a bit of a problem, but I would not cannibalize the truck because of it being rare
Even the 3 on the tree, I would have left that stock and had a real hard time rebuilding that shifter
If you go the rebuild route, maybe just keep the body and frame, and go newer with the engine / management system / chassis, brakes and axles
Body is "tough" or rough?

I just bought this, truck came with the floor shifter, I most certainly would have rebuilt the column, which may yet happen when i decide the route I'm going to take, if I'm rebuilding/restoring it, its going to stay "as built" would be the only way to do it justice, if I upgrade brakes and drivetrain, I may as well continue with plan A. the tailgate would be the toughest part I think, truck did come with one, the bottom is pretty much rusted away, tough and rough would both describe the state of this. everything Mercury is here and in decent shape, the rest is procurable, even a southern cab and box. I'll post pics soon.

That's a tough one. The bad as I like to modify things I think I would restore it back to factory new. Document anything that is not original or have modified.

If you could get your transportation department to run a search to see how may are still registered. I suspect a very low count which makes it more valuable.

@blue68f100 do you know the build date of your truck?? as for what I've been finding, that any trucks produced at the Oshawa Ontario plant right after the cancellation of the Mercury truck line, they ran out the line current stock by simply installing Ford parts, BUT, somehow maintained a Mercury vin till the parts ran out? no idea if this is true, but it sounds like the plant ran for 4 or 5 days running old Merc stock with Mercury vins already populated, (apparently its a massive headache for bean counters to scrap vin numbers already made), so they used Ford parts and labelled them using Merc vin tags!! now that, would be a very rare truck!!!

this is it! 300 6 runs real nice, trans works, brakes work, just rough. tail gate is fixable, just needs bottom replaced. seem to be missing the strikers and the pivots for the tail gate though, came not mounted to the truck.

Wow, its a nice rig and agree with not cutting it up. Those are Ford mirrors for sure, but could be dealer installed. The gate hardware shouldn't be too difficult to find as they were the same through 67 to 72.

The floor shift
It may have needed a shift tube or shift collar, and they have been damn near impossible to get since the 90s
Maybe that's why it has a floor shift, and I would leave it at this point

Looks all there to me. I'd restore it for sure. Those Mercs are rare trucks.

Not sure about those old ones, and especially yours, but they supposedly put the better motors with less core shift etc. in the Lincolns and Mercurys
I started out at a Lincoln Merc store before working at Ford
The old boys told me that
They said Lincoln gets everything first, all the technology, and all the best parts
Mercury the same way

got a local metal fab shop bending me some replacement panels for the tail gate bottom section, as I dont have a 6' long metal brake, going to use a piece of 2" DOM tube to rebuild the bottom, using a zip wheel on the grinder and a piece of angle iron clamped to the tube to allow me to run the zip wheel down the length of the DOM to cut a small notch into the pipe, so when I weld the flat portions to it, it'll be real easy to make a smooth and flush connection that will hopefully be impossible to see is the goal, butt welding that flat panel to the tube will produce a ridge that will be easily seen, so we'll see how that goes!! floor work is going to be a trick, found the Dennis Carpenter site that shows a complete floor assembly, and very tempted to go that route, but that looks like a daunting nightmare to get that set in place properly before welding... found a guy local selling a box from out west, after getting it home, I realize its a '70 or newer box as it has the side marker lights in it, which my '68 does not, so now I'm not sure if I want to weld in fillers or make a bolt in filler? so many ethical question to answer.... still can't decide whether to restore (plan B) or continue with plan A, remove cab and install on my '79 F250 frame to make it what I really want, the '79 frame is clean (surprising for southern Ontario) its 4x4, I already have the dana 60 axles from a '79 1 ton that are in that frame now, and brought home a '99 24v cummins to go into it, and before you all chastise me on the cummins, it did come from a ford bus, and chryco did NOT make that engine, the reason is simple, much as I want a 7.3 PS in this truck, the best mileage i ever got out of the 4 trucks I've owned over the years was 18mpg, with todays fuel prices, ( at a $2.15/ litre, and there's 3.78l in a gallon, that adds up to $8.127 per gallon!!) I've trying my best to get the most mileage I can, so a first gen Cummins, with the 12v VE pump conversion on it is going to power this ride, as I am also done with computers, thats why full mechanical, and the VE pump apparently is capable of 700 bar, so that should be plenty to crack 24v injectors, also got a NV4500 trans behind that with the BW 4401 tcase, should make a bruiser of a rig getting hopefully better than 22mpg.
