If the cam spec is 1500 - 4000 RPM then there is no need to push it to 6000 RPM as it most likely stops pulling at 4500 RPM and just making noise after that.
For a work horse motor the stock cam works pretty good for me pulling from just under 1000 RPM to 3000 RPM when pulling the trailer, without the trailer I shift at or below 2000 RPM.

Yeah, more than likely just noise past the 4500. I have several loads of firewood logs to haul home next week so I'll be able to get a good feel of exactly when the power drops off.

I would also like to know at what low RPM it starts to pull? Do you have to get it up to the 1500 RPM or will it start to pull at say 1000 RPM?
I can run 1200 RPM @ 45 MPH, 1100 RPM @ 40 it gets a little tuff, more so when you hit a hill.
With your cam I would not be able to run that low of a RPM.

Got to move some weight today. It doesn't start to pull until around 1500rpm and above. It will still drive at lower rpm, but the engine seems like it's lugging.
With that weight that seems pretty good. Granted my carb is not sorted yet on mine, nor have I played around with timing yet, and I start pulling cleanly at about 1300 and thats bone stock.

What intake/carb are you running?
I did another haul yesterday and she pulls good from 1500rpm and up. Still have alot more trips left.
we're going to need a bigger truck (jaw's)
You sure are putting that truck to work

Lol. I knew this was coming up but I wasn't able to get my 85 1-ton dump running well enough in time to use it off my property. I had some other side jobs come up that took priority.
It is refreshing to see an old truck putting in real work while the new ones are being used at the grocery store and restaurants!
Well I can tell you with a 300 six, granny 4 speed and over drive so I can split gears, drive it as a 6 speed, it is not fast but gets the job done and I look cool doing it
That was taken a few years ago but I still get thumbs up and nice truck. Last thru I used it in the rain and got 1 of each that was cool.
