The Wife’s Truck
Trying to decide on this or 460. Looks like this was actually bored and hot tanked Going to check crank and pull a few valves etc next. Might be a hone and install tmeyer pistons…
Yea….

look real close on few of those pictures….
rear cam plus missing, gasket shellac all over the intake and head gaskets, dried hard as a rock smeared over into ports and bores.
I agree, heads arent choked quite like a big block and with proper compression they run decent. This one appears to be a 410. 340hp and 440-460 tq seems fairly achievable with mild cam
Cylinders look to have good cross hatch still. Lifter is trashed & it's pretty darn clean despite the missing plug. Personally I'd make sure it's got a good timing set, maybe a new cam & definitely ditch the boat anchor intake and send it after a good cleaning & a reseal.
Cause no matter how much I like a 460, I love my 400's. If it weren't for the bad timing of the oil crisis & all the smog neutering, they'd be one of the most beloved Ford engines un my opinion. The 335 family just never got the high performance love they should have.

I've only ever driven two trucks with 400s that ran GREAT!
One was in a 1/2 ton short bed with a 2 bbl that the shop I was working at installed and another one in a 1977 F-250 4wd, better comp, cam and a 4v.
The 1972 I had the 390 in it was rated at 215 hp, 327 lb ft with 8.7:1 compression. It was a patheticpig.
The camper that was on the truck was a 1963 and he had it on a 1963 F-250 with I'm guessing a 292 Y-block with a 4-speed.
I-80 east out of SLC climbs to 9000 ft.
The owner's daughter told me her dad was pissed because that '72 didn't the grade any faster than his 1963 pickup.
1972, the year of the pigs.
Totally agree! A little bigger cam, 4bbl carb on an Edelbrock intake, dual exhaust and you've woken up the beast. I did a mild build on a 400 for the 79 I had. It ran great and sounded good with the RV cam I used. I really wanted to build a 429 but finances dictated otherwise.

most of the stuff he touched on the 77 was loose, half assed or missing bolts

the tmeyer pistons dropped in this would get the pistons to close to 0 deck and about 9.3:1. if this block hasnt been decked probably around .005-.010”. You see the pistons in the back cylinder? Thats at tdc!, yes they were that far down inhole.

this was how i pulled it from truck, i had tightened two of tHem

1969 429 2V pulled 460 lb ft @ 2200 rpm.
That would be the ideal engine for a truck.
The highest torque rating of a 428 was 462 lb ft @ 2800 rpm.
My 410 was rated at 444 lb ft @ 2800 rpm.
The 1970 460 4V was rated at 500 lb-ft of torque at 2,800 rpm.
I guess it all depends on what you need and want.
compression, mild cam, bowl cleanup and headers can get me these good enough numbers.
Does anyone make a a decent set of shorty or mid length headers?
i can get on board with these numbers, used performer and 1850-3 i already have
hopefully tmeyer restocks on .040 pistons soon

I had Hedman fenderwell hedders on my '79.
I always liked the exhaust exiting in front of the rear tires.
I originally had the hedders and exhaust with turbo mufflers installed and I really couldn't feel any difference in power of gas mileage but it sure sounded a lot better.
It also made no difference when I replaced the catalytic converter with a "test pipe" and removed the air pump.
The last time I had the exhaust replaced I had long glass packs installed instead of the usual turbo mufflers.
My friend that was doing the work rolled his eyes and said, "seriously?"
They actually sounded great and he was shocked at how good they sounded.
Long tube hedders won but could you feel the difference in the seat of your pants? I doubt it.
I like those Hooker exhaust manifolds. Today they would most likely be my choice if they made them for my truck.
I went with JBA shorty hedders on my wife's 1989 Bronco with a 351W in it.
I ordered a Gibson performance cat back system and it came with the factory stock FoMoCo muffle that was already on there.

I don't think there was any improvement.

A Lunati cam, BBK big bore throttle body and the fresh air intake from a F-250 460 did help it a lot.
That Bronco was my favorite winter vehicle. It was the best one for traveling in horrible weather. It was a great snow machine.
These are the stock manifolds that came on the original 360.
The bottom one is the passenger side and just looks restrictive but it was probably just fine for the 360.
If they were both like the driver's side I doubt that I would have bought the hedders.
It will save money and work to keep the 400 and I'll bet it will run great too.
