Hated them then and I still do.

My first car was a 1950 Ford with a flathead V8, 3 on the tree, over drive and a manual choke.
+ ground battery and a starter button.

I had been working on cars before electronic ignition ever came out.
Chrysler was first, 1972. The first HEI was on the 1974 Pontiac Grand Prix. The distributor cap was the same size as the point cap but screws attached it to the distributor. The spark plug wires were were all attached to the ring that snapped down on top of the cap and a new set cost $85 clear back in 1974.
It was cheaper to convert it to a point system than it was to replace a set of wires and that was done all the time.
Which jets are next?
I'm at 68/74.
Creeping around in the hills in 4-high 1st and 2nd gear this morning my truck ran great. Runs great going down the road and at WOT thru the gears.
I'm sure that there is room for improvement somewhere but right now I am quite pleased with the way it runs.

Little undecided on next move, might change primary from 71-72 and change the ifr wire from .013 to .09".
Drug this home yesterday, guy had the seat re-done at the upholstery shop I had price mine, Picked it up for half that price
, cherry on top is wife found it.
On my way home
And that's a beautiful sunset too.
My friend has a 750 DP on his built 460. He went with larger jets and felt that he lost some power.
I'm thinking he needs to step up to an 850 to increase the air flow to accommodate the larger jets.
It seems most of the time, if your near sea level, and carb is sized close to correct for your engine holley stock jetting is pretty damned close. Stock in my 800 is 72/76 6.5 pv front and rear. Later list 4780's had 70's and 71's in primary
I can't tell what cam it has but it claims good from mid to 6000 rpm.
DOVE heads and 11:1 compression.
Weiand dual plane and a Holley 750 DP
He says when it goes with larger jets the truck seems to loose power.
I told him its probably because the AFR is too rich and he should possible go with a 850 DP to increase the air flow.
By doing that he could obviously go with larger jets with causing the AFR to be over rich.
Would you agree??
those weilands really kill things below 3500rpm with crappy carb signal, too much -plenum volume
i think a 750 is about right for a stockish 460 that's healthy,i think 850’s are a weak signal carb?
I know he did some porting and polishing to the heads.
Comp Cam flat tappet Advertised Duration 262/270, Lift .513/.520.
We were talking about intakes a few years ago and he told me he wanted that Weiand intake.
So I bought it for him for everything he did for me when I put the 410 in my truck.
Geof moved his fire truck and his '72 Chevy short bed 4x4 out of their carport.
Put a table in there and lined it with tools for me.
I'm still not sure if I thankful that he sold me the truck or not.

This was a really good day for me.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Seems like a hell of a friend/neighbor
Right rear wheel seal started leaking ever so slightly, stole an axle out of parts truck and threw another timken set 20 on it, cleaned it up nice with scotchbrite etc.. i love those quick change axle plates.
Went ahead and adjusted carb, changed the 71 primaries to 72 and swapped .013” ifr wires back to .09”.
I Need more concrete…

That was the single exhaust that was on the truck when I bought it.
I thought it sounded pretty good too.
I wish my truck would spin both back tires.
Damn open differentials.

Hopefully a locker some day.
Geof drilled and tapped both spindle hubs so I could install factory hubs.
All the original bolt holes were not repairable.
And at the same time he replaced my front drive axle u-joints and installed my new rotors.
I have no idea where I could have ever had those hubs drilled and tapped.

Too early to tell on jetting, just have yard drove it so far, we will see where cruise/power circuits are friday. Mine is a one tire fire too, dont worry
. Not going to lock it, I've got another 3rd with a full spool I could install...but I want the puny half ton stuff to live.

That will cure the truck from ever doing burnouts. LOL
No it won't, just trust me on that one. It may change from a one wheel peel on the blacktop into a two wheel rooster tail on a dirt road. But you'll keep finding ways to spin em & smiling every time.
And look at a Grizzly Yukon as well as a Detroit. I've had both & currently have the Detroit. The Grizzly in much smoother in operation.
The longer the wheelbase the less you know its there.
Some of my friends had them in their Jeeps, CJ5-7 and Wranglers.
Driving them on the freeway was scary.
