An Ottawa businessman driving home from work gets stuck in a traffic jam. Nothing is moving. He sees a police officer walking back and forth, rolls down his window and asks what's the big holdup.

"The prime minister is depressed," says the cop. "The leadership race, trade gripes, softwood lumber, he's worried about Bush, the border and Iraq. He stopped his limo in the street and sat down, refusing to move. Threatens to douse himself with gasoline and light a match."

"Good grief!" cries the motorist.

"He says the country hates him," nods the policeman. "He can't quit yet because he hasn't a big enough pension. So I'm walking 'round taking up a collection for the PM."

"Really!" says the driver. "How much have you collected so far?"

"Only about a hundred litres, but a lot of folks are still siphoning."

"Hello, is this the RCMP?" asks the voice on the phone.

"I want to report my neighbour, Senator Mike McAffrey. He's hiding marijuana inside his firewood!"

"Thanks for your call, sir," says the Mountie.

"Get him while pot's still illegal!" cries the caller as he's hanging up. "Hurry!"

The next hour, a flying squad of Mounties surrounds the neighbour's yard and descends on the suspect senator's house.

They search a shed where logs are stacked. Using axes, they bust open every log they can find, but no marijuana is found.

That night, the phone rings at Mike's house.

"Hey Mike," says the voice on the phone. "Did the RCMP come to your house?"

"Yeah!"

"Did they chop all your firewood?"

"Yeah!" sez Mike.

"Happy Birthday ,Buddy!"
