1966 Steering connection to the box

I need to replace the large rubber gasket/joint from the steering column to the steering box. I have a 1966 F-100. It has a small tear in it and is worn out causing a lot of play in my steering. At first I thought it was the box needing adjustments after reading some of the threads but when inspected is clearly this joint. I just bought the truck and am new to ford classics. Can you help with recommendations as to best on line parts sites and with what this part is called? Also I was I cannot find a shop manual for the 1966 F100 with 352 other than original shop manuals. Is there a good recommendation for a manual? Thanks!

Welcome to FTE!

That's the steering column coupler commonly called the rag joint.

LMC Truck has them. Item 42 on this page.
Truck Parts and Truck Accessories

Mac's has them.

RockAuto has them.

TWO different steering couplers for 1966. It depends on the size of the large pin and what the last 6 digits of the VIN is.

C5TZ-3A525-A .. Steering Coupler - Larger pin is .41" O.D. / Obsolete ~ Available NOS

1965 F100/250 2WD; 1966 F100/250 2WD before serial number 900,001.

GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has 38 = 800-543-4959.

CARPENTER NOS OBSOLETE PARTS in Concord NC has 385 = 800-476-9653.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
C6TZ-3A525-A .. Steering Coupler - Larger pin is .56" O.D. / Obsolete ~ Available NOS

1966 F100/250 2WD from serial number 900,001; 1967/68 F100/250 2WD & F350.

GREEN SALES CO. has 19.

If I were doing it again, I would pay extra and get the NOS item, unless a member can tell you one of the others fits perfectly. I bought the Chinese version locally so I could have it immediately and spent several frustrating hours modifying it to fit. I still worry about its durability occasionally.

Great info, I will try Carpenter first as I live close to Concord and if that doesn’t work out will order it from LMC. I’ll keep you all posted, thanks for the help.

Hey Bill,

I hate to hijack your thread but I want to know what steering gear box you have in your truck. Does your truck have factory power steering? I know PS was an option in '66, but I don't know enough to be able to recognize the gear box from your pic.

The reason I'm asking, is the difference between your steering shaft and mine, as seen in these pics. My truck has a '67 PS gear box and the stock manual steering shaft is too long. With all the adjustment used in the column, my steering wheel is 7/16" away from touching the column.

But it looks like your steering shaft is a lot shorter than the 11/16" difference between a Manual and Power steering shaft.

I have original manual steering. I have parts to convert it to power but not sure I want to do it. It drives straight (now that it’s fixed) and handles well enough for its age. It’s a three speed manual on the column so you can see the linkage parts, maybe that is why the column shaft looks longer on yours. In the photos it looks like the same length from the firewall. Maybe someone can chime in here.

I'm sorry, do you mean Bill or I went aftermarket? Do you mean his selection of the rag joint? And does that have any effect on the length of the steering shaft in relation to the steering wheel position?

Hi Bill,

The parts catalog I have indicates that C6TZ-3524-M to be 34 15/16" long, not 34 5/16" long. That's 5/8" difference, and would make the MS shaft 1 5/16" longer than the PS shaft, instead of the 11/16" longer I had figured using the 34 15/16" from my catalog. HELP!

So, I was already confused. Now I don't know what to think. I never question your data, so should I assume my catalog is in error?

34 5/16 was a typo. As you can see in pic below, I have the same catalog, and...

Since you have the parts catalog, why were you asking these questions?

Well, as I said in post #7, the OP's picture looks to me like his steering shaft is much shorter than the 11/16" length difference I would expect to see between a MS and PS shaft. But he also has the same MS shaft I have and I guess only looks shorter because of the column shifter parts below the firewall.

Besides that, I've been told by others on here that I should be able to adjust my column sleeve upward far enough to close the gap between it and the steering wheel. But the full adjustment leaves a 7/16" gap, which means the turn signals won't cancel and the horn can't work. I can't figure out why I can't close the gap, so I keep looking for answers.
