I'm a mid level mechanic and do have a good bit of experience with trucks. I also have a 1969 Deuce and a Half !
Questions though are about a 1998 F-Series as labeled on the Fender.
I'm pretty sure it's a F700 as denoted by the following VIN 1FDNF70J2WVA02362
7.0 Gas, Auto
It's Factory Yellow. and is outfitted with a 6 yard dump. 25900 GVW
Questions.
1. I suspect it was a Penske truck at origination ?
2. Which Transmission is in this thing ? I get conflicting information about 2 different Allison Trannys that could be in it.
3. It's definitely governed to 55. Not really a question just info.
4. What type of Brake System is on this thing ? I see what appears to be a large pod behind each of the two rear wheels with hydraulic lines going to them.
5. Is the truck covered by OBDII or is there a way to monitor engine codes ?
6. While the brakes seem to work fine. I have a Red Brake light on. There is a small leak in the right rear. I see drips . Any way to trouble shoot without yanking the assembly ?
7. Last The PO installed a 2 speed rear. SpeedO is Off on the high side, 68 indicated 55 actual, any way to correct ? hence the Tranny Question.
Thanks for any help. I'm here because this appears to be the most active Forum and after reading a lot of posts there are lots of knowledgeable folks on here.

PROBABLY GOING TO ADDRESS THIS

Sure could use some help with the above questions. I have ordered a manual.
2) Transmission? Allison makes more than two models. Don't know.
3) Governed at 55. Good idea.
4) Brakes: Lucas-Girling. Good brakes, expensive to fiddle with. A leak usually means some kind of tear down. Besides, you just bought a truck, are you not curious as to how much brake you have left? Pull those wheels.
5) OBDII? Is there an OBD II connector under the dash? Is there a sticker on the engine anywhere indicating anything about emissions or OBD?
6) Brake leak: See above.
7) Two speed & speed-o: Older trucks had a switching block in the speedo cable that switched when you shifted the two speed. Do you have a cable or electronic speedo?
I run an Allison dealership, I can help! lol. Being that is a 98 model you will more than likely have an AT545 in your truck. Grab me the serial number and I can look up some info on your truck. I should be able to see who purchased the truck initially.
There should be a warranty plate on the drivers door. It will have the VIN, transmission and axle codes. Since the rear axle has been changed, you'll have to ID that another way. Post a clear picture of it if you can, or just the numbers if you want.

EXT Paint: RC: 87 DSO:*
WB TYPE-GVW BODY TRANS AXLE
255 F70259 8

Ill need your transmission serial number. On the right rear of the trans there should be a tag with a 10 digit number probably starting with 3210. If you can give me that i can get a little info.
Alright, it looks like that truck was originally sold to a company called KIRK ELBERT MASONRY AND TRUCKING. That transmission is all mechanical but the speed sensor on the rear of the transmission is electric, and controlled by a magnetic pickup. I dont know of any way to change the speedometer by the transmission. I only know of one tone wheel for the speed sensor.

Wow. Great db you have there ! Thanks for the help and if I understand you correctly the speedo is not within the tranny at all and the tranny is controlled by load and rpm demand ?

I will get a picture of the speedo set up and post it here. But the speedometer has no effect on transmission operation. Your valve body is calibrated for the engine rpm (yours is set up as 3000 rpm by the way) and the transmission shifts when the governor pressure tells it to. The governor is under the 4 bolt cover on the driver side rear of the trans. There is also something called a modulator that is on the driver side of the trans. It makes shift point changes at WOT by moving a valve inside the transmission. Yours will have either an electronic, vacuum, or mechanical modulator. If you can take a picture of the driver side of your transmission I can tell you a little bit more about it.
