It's a distributed computing program run out of Berkley. I haven't looked at the website in a long time. But they were working on computer modeling of the human bodies creation of proteins, and how that might go wrong and cause diseases.
You need an internet connection. You run their software on your computer, it downloads a portion of a model for your computer to process, then when it's finished it uploads the results. It uses idle time on your computer, but it is quite processor intensive. The idea is that you get more work done with 100's of 1000's of computers running it all over, rather than trying to do it on local dedicated processors.
When I was running it, I had two 4 core Intel processor computers dedicated to the task running full time, but you don't have to do it that way.
Yea, and I just put 4GB of ram in it. 8 year old laptop, and it's faster than a lot of the guys laptops here. I still run XP, so I'm not burdened by laid on thick and heavy win 7&8.
Well that's nifty! Still, my laptop get's hot enough as it is. Even with a cooling pad. I'll just wait until I can build my own tower. Already picked out the motherboard and case I'll be running. But that's a slow build. The truck is taking a lot of money for what I have planned for the engine.
My wife objected to using our resources for folding. So I put a computer in the back of my closet and let it fold in the dark. Forgot about it for years. When I dug it out the other day it was off, cold, and thick with dust. How long ago I really don't know.
