Question for you C6 tranny users

When coming to a stop or slowing down for a speed bump; at what speed does your tranny shift into low?

I don't think you're going to get a one-size-fits-all answer. Seems like that depends on engine vacuum, i.e. load on the engine at the very least. And if you're asking the speed at which that happens, it also seems like tire size and gearing would matter too.

I do not slow down for speed bumps...that is what shocks are for IMO. To me its actually better to just hit'm fast and be done with it.

Ol silver is a 351M C-6 and 33's, and as far as finial downshift to make a stop sign, I'd guess 10 MPH? I do not pay attention to my speed as long as it (the trans) works properly.

If I am slowing down for a bump, then accelerate slow or even moderately after said bump, the trans will still be in 3rd gear. Mine does not backshift unless I really step on it. The only time mine will backshift to 1st is if I completely stop but never while still rolling.
I would love to change this behavior but it's acted like that for as long as I've owned it! Vacuum modulator is connected and I've adjusted it for upshift speed and firmness. The kickdown rod is in place and works.

That's what I wanted to know. Thanks! Is your C6 a '76 model?

The engine and c6 transmission are both 1976.
Is yours behaving the same?

Yes. I just had it built and the guy installed a shift kit and 2500 stall converter. My C6 is a '67 model. The builder had contemplated trying a valve body out of a '73-75 C6 as it's different than mine. From what I'm seeing; this is just typical C6 behavior. My Cruisomatic did the same thing. It bothers me to slow down and make a turn at an intersection and then to take off in Drive. It's like keeping a manual tranny in third gear and slipping the clutch to get her going.

I am running a fairly firm shift kit, when I coast at slow speeds, it takes around 1/2 throttle to downshift. Its not bad at all.

I'm referring to the tranny shifting down to Low as I coast toward a stop. Foot is off the gas.

Your kickdown linkage isn't adjusted correctly if your tranny is kicking down around 1/2 throttle. It should be full throttle kickdowns only.

I don't recall feeling it downshift but when I ease into the throttle from slow roll like if the light turned green or from a stop, it's in lower ranges.
I have a shift kit that I put in 25 years ago but I didn't change the governor springs then, it shifts 4500 WOT if I hold it ..... a rare very rare deal.

At lower speeds, mine too will kick down at partial throttle, depends on speed, vacuum, throttle. My kick down is correctly adjusted.

I'm guessing that my C6 shifts into low around 5mph. I'll have to check that part throttle kickdown. I haven't really noticed it. Thanks.

Vacuum and the kickdown lever make it shift, if he has load than kicking down at 1/2 throttle is not an issue.
