Turbo Question
Im looking to turbo my 1990 f250 7.3 but i dont want to spend 2000-3000 dollars on the turbo kit. Im seeing on ebay and in the scrap yards people selling the turbo kits off the 93-94 turbo engines pre powerstroke. Would this be a good choice or would i be wasting time? :-huh

Do some searching and reading on here. As long as it is pre-powerstroke, and you get ALL the parts, it's the most economical way to turbo an IDI. (Exhaust piping, valve cover, CDR relocating bracket, turbo pedestal, turbo, oil lines, air intake hat and filter housing....what else did I miss guys?)

there is one on there now, Ford ATS factory turbo kit 7.3 6.9 idi diesel: eBay Motors (item 220659127181 end time Aug-30-10 15:45:38 PDT)
you got 7 hours. its got everything. greywynd, you got it all minus the second valve cover. you need drivers side for the cdr valve hole and you need the passenger side for the glow plug controller bracket. but you need to specify the exhaust. its a cross over pipe that goes from the drivers side to the up pipe, you need the 2 piece up pipe that bolts straight to the passenger side manifold and you need the downpipe. you dont need new exhaust manifolds, they are the exact same as the ones you have now. |
so you guys say it is worth it i know they didnt have the 250hp or 275 hp as the powerstroke but its gotta be better than the 180hp and 380ft lbs im making now right?
|
depends on what your gonna do with it. Turbo only helps if you tow or druve semi steep hills. Flat land and saily driving you won't notice any gain. It's not until your egt's get high that it starts to spool
|
PM me, I've got the whole deal minus the rocker cover, swapped it all out for my Banks kit. The Banks kit locates the CDR on the turbo intake, but since I had factory turbo I had to plug the valve cover to make the Banks setup. All in Canada though!
|
Yeah i use it to tow the dirt cars and it doesnt like pulling the race cars its got plenty of take off but after 2000 it totally dies:-hair

Hey ND, gonna send you a PM! I thought of the second valve cover, but that one isn't the end of the world, just recently someone posted a pic of a bracket mounted GP controller because they didn't have the right valve cover. As far as the driver's side cover, is it possible to modify a stock one? I know it needs a hole for the CDR grommet, is there a baffle or anything inside it to prevent oil splash going up into the CDR, or is it just open?
I suspect that there could be a lot of turbo's out there without the right valve covers, but it would be a shame to not be able to use one because of it. |
There is a splash guard under the CDR opening in the rocker cover on the ATS 093 version.
The stock Ford turbo is a carbon copy of the ATS 093 except for the turbo outlet flange and downpipe. PS the 94 Strokes had 215 HP 95 and 96 had 225 HP 97 had 235 HP A well tuned IDI turbo can run with or in front of any of those years unless they have mods done. |

Oreo somethins wrong with your truck myturbo sppols quick and I see boost running around town though not impressive amounts if I'm just putting around but its more air than I would have NA
|
I don't see why you couldn't.
I also have boost at in town speeds. Big difference from NA by 1500 RPM. |
I agree with everyone else, I can tell a big difference between my 6.9L and my Factory Turbo '94 at all times/anytime.
My stock '94 IDI Turbo is noticeably quicker than my '95 slightly moded and '97 stock PowerStrokes. I think it's mostly because the PS doesn't have a waste gate turbo. My '95 might be a little better at pulling wieght up hill than the '94 but it's hard to tell without having them side-by-side, equally loaded. |
For those wondering what the valve cover mods look like on factory turbos:
