identifying model of transfer case
 

Is there a number cast into the casing or a tag that would tell me the model of it? If so where would it be found? Thanks.

There's a tag on the case just like a differential tag. It will have it on there. Really though you probably have either a Borg Warner 1356 or a Borg Warner 4407. You can tell quickly by just looking. The 1356 has a slip yoke meaning that the rear driveshaft just slides up into it. The 4407 has a short shaft with a flange on it and the rear DS has a flange as well that will bolt up to it.

Mine is a 4407.

I figured being a 96 and all. The internals are essentially the same. The case is beefier and the rear DS hookup is a little better than the slip yoke style. Seems like I've heard of them leaking.

I have a 1356 with a flange on the back of my 96 not a slip yolk

Does that have the pto option /cover on it?

I don't think so.
The case is different to hold the slip seal vs flange.
They are 2 different units.

Could not find much other than some cases had id tags attached and some used stick on bar codes

Probably asking the impossible question but did the 4407 come with and without the pto option and would the output shafts be the same diameter?

I would like a definite answer, if possible, if the 350 yoke would fit the 250 shaft. Some have said it would.

If you're talking about the front yoke, yes, you need the yoke for a 350 drive shaft, it's the same spline and it will bolt right on. They are very hard to come by.

In another thread on the D60 swap I have asked the same type questions and someone said I need to get the yoke from a f350 that had an e4od like mine and they were only in 96-97 years, because the standard trans used a different transfer case. I bought one from a guy and he said it was from a 97 f350 dually that had the pto cover on the case, but I am not sure if that was a standard trans, will need to ask. If that is true then the standard trans transfer case has a smaller out put shaft for the 4x4.
