canister style oil filter

<HR style="COLOR: #d1d1e1; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #d1d1e1" SIZE=1 itxtvisited="1"><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I posted this in the 534 thread but didn't get any response.

This is for my '62 Merc tilt-cab, M950 -I want to get this finished so that I can move the truck this weekend.

Doing the first oil change on the 534 and want to make sure I have the parts inside in the correct order. The new element came with new canister gasket and a washer seal. Is the metal washer on the outside of the canister anything special and should it be replaced.

Also: I did a search of the forum and could not find out what the correct order of spring/washer etc, inside the canister should be. When I took it apart and cleaned everything up it looked like the new washer seal should go on the hollow bolt first; then the spring with the steel bottom against the washer seal; then the element. Is this correct?

I don't want to put this back together only to find it leaking.

I have found alot of interesting info on this site so far. Thanks.

You're order of assembly is correct. The metal sealing washer, unless damaged, will literally last forever. Make certain you remove all of the old gasket.

Rob, you might want to make note of the number Bill supplied. Parts for some of the older stuff are getting harder to find. Also you might come across a deal on new old stock that can be had for pennies on the dollar. I've scored on a couple of these and did well.:)

And places like NAPA can cross these #'s to make sure you get the right stuff.
