need help!!!

I have a 1998 f 250 247,000 miles. It does not want to start when it sits over night. It only has been droping down to about 40F. If i hit it with you no what it fires right up. Then starts fine all day and runs fine.

I also wanted to do ball joints but dont no how to get that nut off the axel.

Thanks

Glow plug relay and/or glow plugs might be shot. Try jumping the terminals on the relay for a ten seconds and see if that helps?

X2. My first guess is the Relay. I changed mine and what a difference.

As far as the nut off the axle, are you talking about the nut that holds the hub on the spindle? Is this 2wd or 4wd?

Welcome to FTE.

Welcome!!

My first question is this. Is your truck a '97?? they didn't have the PSD in '98.. LoL.

Now. If you don't NEED to spray your truck with nitrous(ether) to start it then don't. I would jump the 2 large terminals on the GPR for about 10-15 seconds and see what it does like said above. just to make sure you can check the HPOP rez before you fire the truck up to make sure its full so you know its not draining back. the HPOP rez is on the front of the engine with a plug on the top driver side of it. yours will be an allen head. i'm going to go ahead and say your truck most likely is not draining back so i would check the glow plug system first starting with the GPR then move to the UVH(under valve cover harness), then to the glow plugs.

I have replace the GPR and ohm the Glow plugs. It started today but dident drrop below 40F. My truck is a 96 and its 4wd. So how does that hub come off the spindle after i get the auto hub locks off and snap ring on axel saft?

That is not the way mine is. I have auto hubs and i have the c shap key then a nut that has 1 notch out of it.

strokin'_tatsch 11-24-2009 04:24 PM

not sure how the auto locking hubs are, but next step i would take on your starting problem is check the UVH. the glow plug pins like to melt.

rodneywar 11-24-2009 04:28 PM

The nut should have 4 notches IIRC i might be wrong. Someone will chime in.

95_Dually 11-24-2009 04:33 PM

I have done them. The ones I did had 4 notches on the nut. I have the special sockets to do these. It has been a long time since I have done this though. 10+ years.LOL If it was in front of me, it would jog my memory. Maybe post a picture.

rodneywar 11-24-2009 07:53 PM

Me too I thought it was odd that he only had one notch how is it supposed to come off??

helifixer 11-24-2009 08:54 PM

gently rock the nut back and forward and pull the keeper out straight with a pick it has a tang that goes between the nut and spindle. if you break it is is close to $100.00 from ford as you must buy a service kit

auto hubs have a single nut with a half round keeper the nut is hex and has a slot in the threads about every 1/4 inch that the keeper goes in to than there is a steel washer a Teflon washer than a splined steel washer than a snap ring to hold the lock in place.

Thanks helifixer. Apparently I have never done auto hubs before as none of that rings a bell.
