Saw off Single Gibson Muffler-Insert Straight Pipe

Was suggested to me here to do this. Sounds simpler enough. just saw off the existing muffler (in the middle of the truck) and replace with a straight pipe. will this be effective and proper?

Yup....did mine that way and it sounds real good.

I second that. Dual cat back on my '02 5.4 sounds great. A good friend did his Bronco that way after hearing mine. The pipe pieces are available at Autozone or a local muffler shop can cut a piece for you in the desired size pretty cheap. Just cut the old muffler out and mig weld the new in, you'll love it.

eveready, even though its just a single exhaust?

i want to do this on my mercury but looking at it the pipe b4 and after the muffler arnt straight across so ill have to find a bent/curved piece of pipe.. where would i find one with the right bend?

Dustin1690 03-01-2008 07:55 PM

Might have to bend the pipe with a pipe bender or just buy pipes that are pre bent

If the rear section of pipe is soft mounted (stock), then you might be able to line them up. Aren't they only offset a few inches?

countryboy116 03-01-2008 11:35 PM

why even run a pipe, just leave it dumped under the truck, thats how mine is just cut off right b4 the muffler and left it be, or just get a couple feet of pipe and get a 90 degree bend in it and put it infront of your passenger rear wheel, wont need very much pipe since ur exhaust is already right there basically

Snow hiker, Most of the newer trucks you see with "dual" exhaust are not true dual. The exhaust is comeing out of one pipe and then split. You still have the same sound but it's coming out of two openings. Kinda like a stereo, same song playing, two speakers playing it. It should sound just fine.
