Good evening everyone, I've got a question for the experts here. I am looking at a one owner 97 f350 crew cab srw power stroke 4x4 w 260k on it from Texas. It has 4.10s and an automatic and was 5th wheeled. The indipendent dealer(who got it from an auction) says it has a new/rebuilt tranny, is there any way I can confirm that myself? How many miles is a well taken care of 7.3 capable of? I had the identical truck 6years ago and have regreted selling it ever since..... If I have a prepurchase inspection done at a Ford dealer what do you recomend that they do for an inspection w high miles like this one, can they do a compression test, or is that to involved? I know they can run diagnostics on the injectors and other systems because Ive done that before. What about any tranny tests? Thank you for all your help and sorry for the new guy questions...

That engine still has a lot of life left in her if she was well takin care of. There are a few users on this site that have 500,000 on their strokers.

There is a thread a couple posts down about pre-purchase items to look at. I'm not sure about the automatic training.

Thank you very much, I appreciate it. I read the check list and cruzed around the forum so I got a feel for a few things to look for now. Is there anyone out there who can tell me what to look for/tests to do to check the tranny?

Madvan is pretty up to speed on the tranny and what to look for but the checks that I would do is drive it until it warms up, then put it through its paces, slow accelleration, normal accelleration, WOT (wide open throttle) acceleration make sure that every thing shifts normal, then while pressing on the brake firmly, go to wide open throttle, and see how high your rpms get, this should only take about 1-2 seconds long enough for the engine to max out and you get an rpm reading. Madvan posted the RPM that you should read, and that will tell you the condition of the Torque converter. I will see if I can find the post.

Cool thanks bkcowboss, I'm tryin to break it down now....TC lock should b 1900-2200 or 3000? Wouldnt it depend on 3.55 or 4.10s, open or LS and how big a rubber u were runnin as to when she would start to spin? My last truck was a shiftin son-a-tha-bitch but w 36's and 3.55s she wouldnt power brake inless you were in 4Lo with the hubs unlocked. This truck im lookin at has 4.10 open and 35's.

everything posted is good, also check the tranny for shudder on hard accel from a standstill.

check the turbo fins for dirt ingestion.
see how the engine strats dead cold
ask why the truck was at an auction
how many miles on the rebuilt tranny?
who rebuilt it?
warrenty?
for an overall engne check you can scan for codes, do an inector buzz test and a cylinder contribution test with a scanner for anything major to pop up.

both trucks look great, i like the red one, 35's on 4.10's will smoke the tires no problem powerbraking. from the pic she looks well maintained but just poke around good and look for stuff

Yeah... Sweet! Being from Maine I'm useta rust so a Teaxs truck should be smokin clean body wise... I'm a marine engineer so even if the truck needs a few things i'm not afraid to get some grease under my nails....That Ranch Hand front bumper is sick!
