Fuel cups

Other than fuel leaking into your anti freeze bottle what are the big problems cracked fuel cups will give you?

largefries 09-26-2007 03:48 PM

Having delt with this problem, I'm told any seal that is in the cooling sytem, water pump, hoses, etc. I haven't had any problems, yet, but I only fixed it last spring. I've got my fingers crossed.

WonderDonkey 09-26-2007 04:34 PM

that makes since, when you pulled your cups out could you tell which ones were leaking?

Action4478 09-26-2007 05:11 PM

From what I read ....You need to pressurize the cooling system ,usually with injectors out

Look ...here....

If you pressurize without pulling the injectors you can tell which bank has bad cups by removng the fuel lines at the filter bowl.

It puts pressure in the bowl?...

What kind of symtoms would you see/feel if this happeind? Stalling, rough idle, power loss, won't run, tail pipe exhaust color, steam, etc etc ?? Just curious. Country

Fuel in the coolant bottle.....

largefries 09-27-2007 10:39 AM

with the injectors in I could not even find out what side was leaking. I removed fuel lines, presurized, everything I could think of. If you take out the injectors you don't need to pressurize the cooling system, coolant just runs out into the cup and down into the cylinder. If you search this forum for "diesel in coolant" you'll see my discussion with the others. If you need more help i'll keeping checking back.

If you're doing this job, make sure you get the right loc-tite, #62000. The parts guys hard time finding it and tried to tell me all the green stuff is the same (and the numbers are similar)- it's NOT. I also used "ship shape" from Active Chemicals to clean out the cooling system. I don't know where to buy it, I got it from a diesel mechanic.

here is the link to the thread, and if you have any questions about the special tools let me know, I've built both the removale and instal tool. It's realatively easy. Get the cups and injector o-rings from international. Cups are about $10 each vs $40 from ford and same for the rings.

WonderDonkey 09-27-2007 03:36 PM

did you do them all at once or find the ones that were leaking and replace just those

largefries 09-27-2007 04:01 PM

I totally fluked out! I pulled the easiest injector to get to, drivers side front (don't know the cylinder #) saw coolant leaking, replaced that sleeve and put it back together. It's been fine since. I'm keeping my eye on the bottle for more diesel, cause the rest may go, who knows. I thought if we (on this site) could keep track, there may be a common cup to fail.

No. You remove the fuel feed lines at the filter bowl. Whichever head has the bad cup(s) will bubble out of the corrosponding fuel line. It will at least let you isolate which head has the bad cup(s) before you even remove the valve cover.

largefries 09-27-2007 04:56 PM

I found that to remove those lines you need to release the fuel pressure. Then when you undo those lines all the fuel runs out and you have no liquid to bubble through.
