6.9 or 7.3 turbo in a 70s model f250
 

i have thought it would be kool to put a 6.9 or 7.3 turbo in an older truck like a 70s model i know it would take quiet a bit of money but aside from that what else would be some problems i would run into thanks justin

Really nothing would be a problem if you are handy with simple metal fab. You only need a couple wires to run the motor. You can find four core radiators that would fit that body style. If you are using a truck with a BorgWarner trans that would easy also. Get a bellhousing off of a T-19 and bolt it to the T-18. The input shaft is the same so that isn't an issue. It wouldn't be to bad.

catfish is right. The only thing you would really need to worry about would be the frame towers that would need to be fabricated in order to bolt the engine down, if you have fab skills it shouldt be too big of a deal. But you will need alot of odds and ends stuff such as adding a hydraulic clutch slave cylinder and setup, hoses for p/s, fuel lines etc. The best thing would be to buy a complete 80's model pickup with a 6.9/7.3, that way you will have all the odds and end parts you will need. You will want some heavier front suspension also because that diesel will be considerably heavier than what was ever offered in a 70's era pickup. I'm thinking super duty springs would work fine, you may need to do a little modifying to get them to fit but they are rated for the diesel engine.

This has been done several times before, I even know of one conversion with a cummins.

From what I have read, you may need some modification of the firewall if you want a turbo in there.

And ofcourse, the crossmember will have to be modified and you will have to make your own engine mounts. If you have a good mig weilder (and cutting torch) and know how to use it, you should be fine.

The only thing I would suggest, is to get a 5 speed in there while you're at it.

I'm playing with the idea of putting a 6.9 into an 80s vintage Bronco.

Now thats a rig I'd like to see. Should be a fairly simple swap too, the frame is much closer than a 70s ford. I would imagine it should be possible to swap the rad support, and even crossmember from a diesel, then put a D60 in the front, that would make one seriously over built ride :-X06 .

Wow! I too would love to see that & maybe even take a ride in. With your wrench & fab skills that should be a no-brainer for you. Maybe even do it in your sleep.

i have personally seen it and it was a fairly simple since the front end is basically a f-series. he did a nice job and it sounds good with the side pipes.

as for putting it in a 78 or older i think the big stuff coms in when you want to add a turbo. i dont think you can put one in without some custom firewall work.

yea but that would be one heck of a cool bucket.

I'm putting a 6.9 with a ATS turbo kit on it (non-waste-gated turbo) in my 79 F-250 Super cab right now! It has a Dana 60 in the front end of mine. You may want to consider a 3" body lift to fit the turbo in. I'm running a beefy C-6 tranny for it. And yes its for a Diesel. I put a gear redution kit in it and a heavy duty sprag kit as well. We will see how it turns out LOL........

sorry for not posting my computer crashed if i did the swap i would put it in a high boy with the divorced transfer case im not much on body lifts but if i had to do it for engine or tranny clearance issues i would

We looked into putting a 6.9 into a 78 f250 4x4. The only real problem I saw was the ac & heater on the firewall would have to be removed or altered for the engine to fit in the engine compartment . The owner of the truck wasn't willing to do that much modification .

I always say anything is possible with an idea , an immagination ......oh yea , also a cutting torch and welding machine ....lol.

As it happens I'm putting a Bank's Turbo 6.9 in a 67 F250. I updated the chassis by using a 78 cab&chassis frame ( narrower behind the cab)
I opted to not move the engine forward and modified the firewall to clear the down pipe as I may need the room to put the 90 model radiator in front.
I've got a long way to go right now repairing rust is taking My time. It should go fast over the next few week's

1967 Turbo 6.9, Is that an overdrive unit in there? If so, good plan :-X22 , these diesels really need it for the freeway.
