Broken lug stud
 

I was replacing the rotors on my 2002 F350 when one of the lug studs broke off. I've gotten a replacement and knocked the old one out. I was wondering if anyone had any tricks on sliding the new one in, or do I just have to suck it up and take the hub off?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you can get it started back in from the back, put several washers on the front side of it, start the lug nut by hand and make sure you have it threaded on over several of the threads, then use an impact wrench to gently run the lug nut on. This will pull the stud in and seat it on the back side. You may have to stop and add more washers as you are pulling the stud through with the impact. Just be careful not to go too far with the impact or you will stretch the threads on your new stud and in the lug nut.

I did it that way once by hand. However, I don't believe you can do the front on the truck. Rears usually have an inspection port that will work to pass the lug forward.

When you beat the old, broken stud out, you will screw the front hub bearings, FOR SURE! Don't do it!

Take the front hub off. It will take you only about twenty minutes. Then you can take the hub to a place (like a vise) where you can properly support the back of the hub while punching the old stud out and the new one in.
