Oil pressure getting low

I have a 1994 F 150 4.9 inline 6 cyl. Just made a long trip from Missouri to California 1800 miles. About 1600 miles into it my oil pressure gauge started dancing dangerously to the left The Low Side. I stopped and it readjusted a little lower but I was able to drive it about 125 miles until it completely went flat line every time I hit the gas. I let it cool down and it made it the last 75 miles. My oil pressure is lower now than usual. Is my oil pump getting ready to go and if so is it hard to replace. I called and they want twenty dollars for the pump. Any help is appreciated.

dont trust the stock ford gauges. install a mechanical gauge to get an accurate reading. what brand oil filter are you using?

the oil gauge is an idiot light and if pressure drops below 7 psi than it moves.

do noit drive this truck anymore until it is fixed.

the pump is maybe the problem but i bet the pickup screen is clogged.

not an easy job because the oil pan has very little clearence and has to be removed.

it could also be a bad sender. if the oil pressure was truely bad you would hear lifter noise for sure.

I heard the lifter noise The pressure is definitely bad No noise now but oil pressure considerably lower than before. Is oil pump on the front of the motor?

Can an average guy replace this oil pump? I appreciate any advice or posts

yes, you can do it.

oil pump in front and pickup extends to the rear.

use search if it is working or do what i did was just go back page by page in the oil.section to find the articles i liked

A clogged, cheap oil filter will cause this also I would check that out before tearing out your oil pump. Also use a good quality grade oil.

Flush out your oil system twice before you change out your oil pump. A clogged passage will affect pressure and putting a new pump in it will just shoot those clogs all over the engine.

the long and short of it is you need to hook up a mechanical gauge to find out what the real oil pressure is before you do anything else.

then if you try oil change or motorcraft filter you will see a change or no change and be able to know what to do next.
