Turn 1979 F150 4x4 into 4x2
I've got an odd question:
Can I swap out the front axle and suspension of my 1979 F150 4x4 to convert it to a 2wd? Are the mounts the same for the springs, shocks, and I-beams (radius arm?)? Is it a simple swap or are the mounting points all different? I have the service manual, but I can't really tell from the pictures if its the same. Logically speaking you'd think it would be this easy, but then again I wouldn't bet on it. TIA. Greg |
I suppose you could do it, but I'm curious as to why. If you really want a 2wd, it'd be a lot easier to just find 2wd truck and buy that.

it's 'easy' but it will take some time. my question is why not just leave it in 2wd all the time? lol . not to mention taking the t-case out you will have to get a 2wd tailshaft for your tranny and prolly have to redo your driveshaft.

Well its kind of all in set up. I had put a 1950 Ford F3 body on a 79 chassis, and the way the body fit on the frame I could fit 33" tires, and it was fun, pretty unique cruiser. But I never offroad it, its pretty much a cruiser, so I'm looking to move to just a normal truck stance, not a low rider or anything. Oh also with the 33" tires, I can't fit in my garage, I have to lower the tire pressure and roll it in. Plus I had previously contemplated switching to an auto trans, and that takes new driveshafts anyways. Call me a glutton for punishment I guess.

I would just put some smaller tires on it and leave the front hubs unlocked...
