Turndowns Vs. Pipes??
When I purchased my truck 6 months ago,it came with SI/DO flowmaster exhuast, that had turndowns directly after the muffler. (Talk about rumble in the cab) It was a tad to loud for me so soon after. I Had dual pipes run to the tail with tips. since then I noticed that I a not pulling as many MPG as I used too. Since then I had the flowmaster swaped out for a magnaflow SI/DO. No difference, but defiantly quieter. Did the addition of pipes cuase this? I wouldn't think so.....Thanks for all future reply's!!
Oh and which setup is better for our 4.2's? turndowns or pipes? Black 01 F-150 4.2 5 spd |
Also I live down in the lower parts of Texas (Where it is humid and hot!) Even though the truck calls for 5W20, I have always thought and been tuaght that in the warmer climates 10W30 is best. With that being said how does the 4.2 fare with 10w30? Thanks again!!

10W30 is fine for your truck. You will not run into any issues using 10W30 at all. That's what I use and I live in Lufkin, TX so I know what you mean by humid and hot. I have a 40 series flowmaster turned down on my truck, and I like it a lot. I don't really know if one is better than the other. I like my turndowns though...plenty enough power for me.

Thanks True4.2 for your input. I will probably end up going back with turndowns. Hopefully the magnaflow won't be as loud in the cab as the old 40 series 3" in/2.5"DO flowaster was...

Why don't you like the loudness man???????
im stumped |
loud pipes save lives man..................sometimes....:-blah :-blah :-blah :)
|
haha That's weird because yesterday I saw a dodge truck that had that decal on his back window lol
|
:) I do like loud exhuast, but I also like to hear my pioneer when I on the freeway doing 70....But don't worry, come monday, dual turndowns on the magnaflow..

Hey Guys...while I am at it
For one is the 4.6 liter F-150 faster than our 4.2, or no?. I haven't read anything of this in any other thread..Ofcourse there are like 280 of them.. Also, and I find this somewhat amusing, I have a friend that has a 99' pontiac Grand Prix GT...a Series two(with roman numeral) 3.8 liter..and at any given speed(drop down punch it) its basically neck to neck racing. If we race from a stop, Even if i shift poorly I spank him badly...I guess I could slap a GT sign on the side of my truck....I drivin' his, not very impressive, for a GT..One more win for the 4.2's. I aplogize in advance for asking this question, but I have seen it in another thread before, and have yet to find it again..what are the best shift points for a 5spd? |

First question: Is a 4.6 faster..... It all depends on what type of truck, auto or stick, 4 or 2 wheel drive...and the driver. No, we are definately NOT just flat out faster. . . given the right circumstances, we can take a 4.6L Ford. I can take an automatic all day from any point, but I got spanked one day in Houston at the track by a 4.6. He ran a friggin' 14.9 to my 16.something. He had 4.10 gears, LSD, chip, and a Lightning exhaust though...so it would be a close race stock. And he was a 4.6 RCAB 5 speed. I'm a 4.2 RCAB 5 speed. Last question: Shift point?...... If you have a tachometer, shift at around 5300 RPMs. If you don't...take 1st to 30, 2nd to 55, 3rd to about 88, 4th on out. Keep in mind that is REDLINE shifting! :-X22 |
