ABS Brake Problem
 

I'm looking for an alternative brake specialist besides the Ford dealer. I just got through having them check my ABS (activates at slow speeds). When they did a system diagnostic, no codes showed up but the service tech said that "in his experience, the ABS sensors go bad and have to be replaced" $400 thank you.

I've got a 1995 Explorer 2 wheel drive and I'm looking for someone who can do ABS diagnostic and tell me if I have a component failure (which I doub- ABS works OK, it just activates at slow speeds), or perhaps there's something funny with the new rotors I installed.

I've doublecheck everything - cleaned sensors, reinstalled rotors - 3 times, even swapped out the new rotors for more expensive ones.

Can I take the sensors out easily? I can see a bolt on the little housing when the wire goes in but when I take the bolt out, I can't get the housing off and am a little shy about forcing it.:-X15

I'm not sure about the '95, but on my '99 there are three sensors. One on each front wheel, and one on top of the differential. The two fronts are held in place by a single 8mm bolt. Remove the bolt, and the sensor will pull straight out. It has a long cylinder (about 1-1/2 inches long), and a second shorter cylinder that the bolt goes through. Wiggle the sensor while pulling straight out. The wire is about 2 feet long, and connects near the bumper...disconnect by pulling straight down and squeezing the holder clip.

The rear sensor mounts on top of the differential with a 10mm bolt. It comes out at a forward angle. There is an o-ring on it, so it takes a little more wiggle to get out. The wire connects right at the sensor.

Front sensors: $24.95 each at dealership

Rear sensor: $10.99 at dealership

Like I said, I don't know if the '95s use the same sensors or mounts...hope this helps.

I have a 96 Ltd with the same problem...I've just been to busy to investigate the problem.,...

Just like you at slow speed stop the anti skid chatter will engage and the wheel pulls to the left...

I think it may be a low speed sensor issue...I will trouble shoot in the next week to see if it is a fix

Have you had any luck with the repair yet?

What you described is similar to what I see on my '95. I'll take the sensors out and clean them as much as I can. By the way, our local Ford dealer wants $120 for the pair of front sensors and $210 to install them. Perhaps my are different than yours but how different can they be to warrant that cost difference!!!!

I also found out that there is a TSB for this problem generated in 1998 (#980319 seq 353)but can't find a way to see what it says. Any ideas?

Tried to repair the problem on my 96 LTD....Changed Rotors and Pads, and found one caliper slider a little sticky....

Cleaned the sensors and check OHMs to be at .30 as per the manual on both sides...

Jumped in the truck and came to a stop with the ABS problem still there!!!!!

I have a 97 mounty and it is going in Thursday for the ABS test.I just had all 4 rotors turned and new front+back pads..When i got it back we almost smacked a car due to no brakes.They readjusted the pads and said they need to set in.Now it's been about 3 weeks.Almost hit a dog and another car that stopped fast.I slam them on and more or less come to a rolling stop.At 40mph it takes me from one pole to the other to stop.Sometimes it is better than that.However the dealer says they are ok but will put them on the computer for codes..

I had the same problem on my 93 explorer and what i did was disconect the cable going to the abs acuators. this disables your whole abs system but it will not kick on a drive you insane. pulus for me when i hooked it back up 3-4 months later the system worked fine.

You need to replace the sensors on your rear axle, which cost anywhere from $35-$50 for the part, and the sensors on the driver side front brake assembly, this will cost around $100-$150 for the part. I have a 4x4 in which I had all three replace, on mine there is also one on the front axle. Best way to do this is to replace the rear one on the rear axle first, which usaully goes out first. Then work your way from there. Also you can replace the fuses, too. which is under the hood on the passenger side, near the front of your vehicle.

I had a dealer charge me $600 for all three sensors on my '95

He said the front sesnors were $20 each and the rear sensor was $300

I later caught him ripping me off on a transfer case quote so I know he is a thief

the rear sensor got chewed up by some debris in the rear axle (the clutch had burned out and left debris behind. I was told my rear axle was bad about 30,000 miles ago but I am still waiting for it to fail)

I had the same symptom of abs activation at low speed.

if you change the rear sensor, make sure you drain and refill the rear axle oil

I have the same problem on a 2002 FX4 XLT 4.6L.

It just started doing it.

Why would the rear diff fluid need changed if you replace the rear sensor?

Isn't this sensor on TOP of the diff?

My rear axle is definitely going bad. Are these related?

I have a 1999 ford explorer sport with approximately 115,000 miles and last week my ABS light turned on so I took it to the dealer. The diagnostic showed the following error #XL2Z2C219BA. This error is supposed to be the beginning of various hard codes stored in controller and it has several erratic codes. The dealer tells me that I need to change the controller ($784 for the part and $425 for the labor) just to find out what other errors need fix. Does this make sense? It seems to me that the price of the part and the labor is very high. At the end of diagnosis they came up with almost $5000 dollars in things they suggest to fix. Please help! Thanks for this Information. I have a 2002 Explorer XLT 4.6. I wondered if I was having ABS issues, but wasn't sure since the roads have been icy. Last year I actually hit someone because of the ABS taking to long for me to stop. Same deal today (but didn't hit anyone). Darn near slid right into a busy intersection. When this happened today I noticed the brakes ped didn't go down very far before the ABS kicked in. Once stopped the brake ped went down further. I'm going to replace these sensors, I'm sure this is what the issue is. Thanks again!!!
